The Greater Republic of Central America was an attempt to unite the Central American countries of Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador into a single state, lasting from 1896 to 1898. It came about as a result of the Pact of Amapala signed on 20 June 1895 and it came in the aftermath of the failed Federal Republic of Central America earlier in the century. Although Guatemala and Costa Rica considered joining the republic, neither country joined. The republic, which was rechristened the United States of Central America when its constitution went into effect in 1898, intended to locate its capital city at the Honduran town of Amapala on the Gulf of Fonseca. However, the union did not survive a seizure of power in El Salvador by General Tomás Regalado in 1898.
