About the school

The school is an English medium co-educational school affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Government of India and follows the 10+2 educational pattern. It has 4 buildings. They are -

  • The main block (houses classes 4 to 10, the computer and science labs, the library, the main office and the principal's and vice principal's offices)
  • The montessori block (houses montessori sections, classes 1 to 3, the art room, the theatre workshop and the auditorium)
  • The senior secondary block (houses classes 11 and 12, the maths lab and the OHP room)
  • The Kindergarten building

The School runs two early learning programs, the Montessori and Kindergarten systems. At the senior secondary level (Class 11 onwards), students are offered the option of studying either Science (PCMB or PCMCs) or Commerce (with the option of Mathematics or History). Each grade level has three sections, each comprising no more than 40 students (although this is variable from Class 11 as usually more students take up Science than Commerce). In the annual Outlook magazine ratings, the school was placed second in the city and fifth in the nation.[1]

The school mandates the study of Hindi from Class 1 as a 2nd language, while Sanskrit is taught from Class 5 as a 3rd language. In Class 9, students have the option of studying either Hindi or Sanskrit as their 2nd language. Kannada is not part of the curriculum at any stage.

Usually the students of the school are not allowed to participate in the fests, but are involved in their organisation and volunteering. The school also organises 3 intra school events. They are

During the last week of June every year, the Investiture ceremony is held wherein the School Prefect and Vice Prefect, the Sports Captain and Vice Captain, the house captains and vice captains and the presidents and secretaries of the various associations in the school are nominated.

Towards the end of the academic year, the Flag Handing Over Ceremony is held wherein the prefect and the captains hand over charge to their deputies for the rest of the academic year. The house cup is also given to the winning house during the ceremony.

There are also events for Teachers Day, Children's Day, Independence Day etc.

In addition to all this, the school also organises the Graduation Day in the month of February every year for the passing out batch of class 12.

Academics

The school follows the CBSE syllabus. The school also has the distinction of being given the Autonomous Status by the CBSE, which is a prestigious honour given to very few schools. The Autonomous Status ensures that the school is free to frame its own curriculum till Class 9 without any interference.

As per the guidelines of CBSE, students are not ranked on their performance, but are graded. The grades are –

Grade Percentage What it means
A1, A2 80% and above Excellent
B1, B2 70% – 80% Good
C1, C2 55% – 70% Fair
D1, D2 35% – 55% Average
E Below 35% Fail

A student who secures 'E' grade in 2 subjects or more in the final exam will not be promoted to the next class. This system exists from Classes 6 to 8. A student who fails in the above mentioned criteria in Classes 9 or 11 has to appear for the re exam in the subjects failed during April so that the student does not lose the Board Exam year.

Internal assessment marks and grades for co curricular activities are also given as per CBSE guidelines. Admission to Class 11 in the school is unique in the sense that it is given on the basis of the overall percentage in Classes 8, 9, and 10. Only a student who secures above 60% in the mentioned criteria is eligible to continue in the senior secondary level in the school.

In Class 10, students appear for the AISSE (All India Secondary School Examination) and in Class 12, students appear for the AISSCE (All India Senior School Certificate Examination), the board exams conducted by the CBSE.

Also apart from core subjects and languages, as per the directives of the CBSE, subjects like Computer Science (till Class 10 it is categorised under Work Experience, from Class 11 onwards it is an elective core subject), Environmental Education and Art are also taught.

Extra Curricular Activities

Every evening after school, classes for guitar, keyboard, tabla, Western music, classical music, dramatics, aerobics, yoga and Bharatanatyam are conducted for interested students.

Sports Facilities

Events on athletics, basketball, volleyball and throwball are conducted annually (although there are cricket and football teams too, but events are conducted occasionally outside the school). The school conducts taekwondo classes for students between classes 1 to 10 every Saturday morning.

School song

Originally the school song was only sung by the graduating students during Graduation Day. But from 2003 onwards, the school song is sung every Friday during the morning assembly and at the end of important events. It is an Adapted Version of Shine,Jesus,Shine .

Lord help us to reach out to others
In the midst of our darkness shining
Let the light of our alma mater shine on us
Set us free from the shackles of ignorance
Shine on us (2)

Shine let it shine
Fill our school with honour and glory
Blaze spirit blaze
Set our hearts on fire
Flow river flow
Flood our nation with peace and harmony
Help us reach out, reach high and reach beyond!

Lord help us to reach high above us
Keep our feet ever firm on the ground
Lord we come to your mighty presence
From our shadow into your radiance
Shine on us (2)

(Shine let it shine)

Lord help us to reach beyond horizons
Show us a vision that's filled with your wisdom
Mirrored here may we shine an endeavour
To glorify the name of NPS forever
Shine on us (2)

(Shine let it shine)
