Titular History

Emperor Paul I of Russia, last of the Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp ceded the Duchy lands to Denmark. Denmark then mediatised Holstein-Gottorp into the Holstein-Segeburg state, thus creating a new entity: Schleswig-Holstein. In exchange, Denmark granted the Tsar the territories of the Duchy of Oldenburg. Tsar Paul created the title of Duke of Holstein-Oldenburg and his successor was Friedrich August [http://www.geocities.com/kfzhouy/Chron/Chron11e.html A Chronology of World Political History 1701 - 1800] ] .

His son and heir apparent, Peter Friedrich Wilhelm, succeeded him as Wilhelm I, Duke of Oldenburg.
