Aorangi Terrace

Aorangi Terrace, commonly known as Henman Hill, cite web |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/4088464.stm |title=Wimbledon 2006 guide |accessdate=2008-07-02 |work=BBC Sport |publisher=bbc.co.uk |date= ] is an area in the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club where, during the annual Wimbledon tennis championship, crowds of people without showcourt tickets can watch the tennis matches live on a giant television screen at the side of No. 1 Court. The terrace is also the main site for spectators to eat picnics. During television broadcasts of matches, cameras often sweep over the area, and sports journalists frequently conduct vox pops and interviews with members of the crowd.

Information

The terrace is named after Aorangi Park, the London New Zealand Rugby Club's grounds which were situated on the site until 1981. Since the late 1990s however, the area has been referred to as "Henman Hill", named after the former British number one ranked player, Tim Henman. Alternate Names

Although "Henman Hill" remains the most widely used name for the area, the terrace's name tends to change depending on which British player is participating. During Greg Rusedski matches, the area was sometimes called Rusedski Ridge. Since Henman's retirement in 2007, [cite news |authors=Caroline Cheese |title= Happy Henman's fitting finale?|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/7007419.stm|work=BBC Sport |publisher=bbc.co.uk |date=2007-09-21 |accessdate=2008-07-02] the area was colloquially renamed after current British number one, Andy Murray, with suggestions such as Murray Mound, [cite news |authors=Martin Johnson|title= Happy Wimbledon: Murray Mound slumbers|url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2008/06/30/stjohn130.xml|work=The Telegraph |publisher=Telegraph Media Group Limited |date=2008-06-29 |accessdate=2008-07-02] Mount Murray [cite news |authors=Barbara Ellen |title= We cuddle up to Nelson, but fight shy of ending discrimination|url=http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jun/29/4|work=The Observer |publisher=guardian.co.uk |date=2008-06-29 |accessdate=2008-07-02] and Murrayfield (in reference to the stadium in Edinburgh of the same name).
