Dost Ali Khan

Dost Ali Khan

Ali Dost Khan, often referred to as Dost Ali Khan by most historians, was Nawab of the Carnatic from 1732 to 1740. He was the son of Ghulam Ali Khan, brother of the Nawab Saadatullah Khan. His childless uncle adopted him as heir, and he succeeded his uncle in 1732.

Dost Ali Khan had two sons, Safdar Ali Khan, Hasan Ali Khan, and several daughters. He gave one daughter in marriage to Chanda Sahib whom he appointed as his Dewan, and another to Murtuza Ali. (Murtuza Ali assassinated Safdar Ali Khan in 1742.)

The Rajah of Tirusivapuram, a vassal of the Nawab, refused to pay his tribute. Dost Ali Khan ordered Chanda Sahib to march against the Rajah. Thereupon the Rajah invited the assistance of the Marathas. At the same time, the Nizam, unhappy with the succession of Dost Ali Khan as Nawab, also incited the Marathas to invade.

The Marathas responded to the double invitation. They sent a large army to invade Carnatic.

Dost Ali Khan and Chanda Sahib met the Maratha army under Chattrapati Shahu at Ambur, on 20 May 1740. The Marathas won the battle. Dost Ali Khan was killed and Chanda Sahib was captured.
