La Manche, Newfoundland and Labrador

La Manche, Newfoundland and Labrador

La Manche is a coastal community in the southeast portion of the island of Newfoundland between Cape Broyle and Burnt Cove that was resettled after a major storm on January 28,1966 which wiped away a large portion of the community. This community was first settled in the 1840s by George Melvin. Prior to being settled, La Manche served as seasonal fishing grounds for fishermen from Newfoundland, England and France. The community of La Manche was inhabited by the Melvin family with the exception of one family of Cranes. There was a small church located in the community but it was not served regularly by the Catholic priest who resided in the neighboring communities. In the earliest census information dated to 1845 there were about 34 inhabitants in La Manche, 5 of those 34 having been born in England.
