Carinthian Blondvieh

The Carinthian Blondvieh is an old cattle breed that is native to Carinthia in Austria [ [http://www.uco.es/grupos/cyted/Kcralek_587_589.pdf Preservation of rare breeds in Austria] ] .

Characteristics

Uniformly white to pale yellow cattle with light coloured mouth, horns and claws. Cows weigh 500-600 kg, bulls 800-850 kg. The Blondvieh was once draft animal as well as a milk and beef producer.

History

The date of origin is unknown. Dr. Adolf Gstirner sees the Blondvieh as descendant of the Slovenian Cattle that came with Slavic people to Carinthia. They were crossed with the Gelbvieh to form a new breed.

Population

2002: 421 cows - 42 bulls

2005: 524 cows - 40 bulls - 323 calves
