Ken Beamish

Ken Beamish

Ken Beamish (born August 25, 1947) is the Commercial Manager at Blackburn Rovers Football Club, and an English former professional footballer and football coach and manager.

Beamish was born in Birkenhead. He played throughout his career as a forward and played 555 times in the Football League - scoring 159 times.

He played for six league clubs:

Tranmere Rovers (twice), Brighton & Hove Albion, Blackburn Rovers, Port Vale, Bury and Swindon Town.

While at Blackburn, he endeared himself to the fans, who would chant "Beamo" whenever Beamish's shot at goal flew over the bar. To Blackburn fans of a certain generation, a Beamo is any off-target shot.

After retiring he became manager of Swindon Town.

Career at Swindon Town

John Trollope originally brought Beamish to the club as his assistant. After Trollope's unsuccessful venture into management came to an end, Beamish took over the reins from him towards the end of the 1982-83 season.

Working on a tight budget, Beamish never really had a chance, and in his only full season, he led the Town to their lowest ever league finish - a disappointing 17th in Division Four.

When his contract expired at the end of the 1983-84 season, new sponsors Lowndes Lambert demanded a big-name manager, and Beamish was allowed to leave - with Lou Macari arriving in his place.
