Diarmuid Connolly (born July 7, 1987) is a Dublin Gaelic football and Hurling player who plays his club hurling and football for St Vincents.

Playing career

Hurling

Connolly played at U-21 hurling level for Dublin in 2006. He came on as a substitute in the Leinster U-21 championship final against Kilkenny and scored a goal in Dublin's ill-fated revival. Dermot Connolly made a decision to fully concentrate on Gaelic football for the 2007 season, which rules him out of Tommy Naughtons plans for the upcoming season.[4] Diarmuid made a return to inter-county hurling in June 2007 against Wexford in the semi-final of the Leinster Under-21 Hurling Championship. Connolly scored a crucial goal in Dublins one point victory which sent them into the Leinster final.[5] He won the Leinster Under-21 Hurling Championship with Dublin agaainst Offaly in July 2007. It was Dublins first Under-21 trophy since 1972.[6]

Football

Diarmuid Connolly played at minor level for Dublin in 2005 in the Leinster semi final. Dublin lost the game to Laois by a scoreline of 3-08 to 1-07 with Connolly scoring 1-03 of Dublin's total score. Playing in his first inter-county senior football match in 2007, Connolly impressed against an outnumbered DCU side in the first round of the O'Byrne Cup with a total of 1-05 (0-1f). Dublin were the eventual winners by a scoreline of 3-14 to 0-12.^[1][2] Connolly scoring record to date with the Dublin senior football team in the O'Byrne Cup 2007 is 1-08. He played a pivotal role in Dublins easily won quarter final encounter against Westmeath and a further five points against Wicklow in the semi final.[7][8] He won the 2007 O'Byrne Cup for Dublin against Laois at O'Connor Park in Offaly. The game finished on a scoreline of 1-18 to 2-13 against Laois. He scored 0-07 in the final, which made him the top scorer for Dublin in the O'Byrne Cup with a total of 1-20 (0-9f, 0-2 '45's).[9] Connolly made his national league debut for Dublin against Tyrone on February 3, 2007, scoring three points.[10] Diarmuid scored 1-6 (0-3f) for Dublin during their 2007 campaign in Division 1A.[11] Diarmuid made his championship debut for Dublin against Meath in the quarter final of the Leinster Senior Football Championship at Croke Park.[12]

Connolly won many honours as part of St. Vincent's juvenile set up, the most memorable being an All-Ireland Football Feile title in Croke Park in 2000. He was also a part of the St. Vincent's team that won back to back championships in football and hurling in 2001 and 2002. At schools level he captained Ardscoil Rís to an U/14 "A" Dublin Colleges football title in 2001 [13] and was a part of the U/16 Hurling team that won the Dublin Colleges U/16 "A" hurling title in 2002. He was also a member of the Dublin Colleges Senior team that captured the All-Ireland Colleges title in May 2006 [14].

Hurling

2006 has a very successful season for Connolly with St Vincents. He was the top scorer for the St Vincents senior hurling team that made it to the semi final of the senior hurling championship. St Vincents lost the semi final to Ballyboden St Endas with Connolly scoring a total of 1-03. In honour of Connolly's hurling performances in 2006, he was named on the 2006 Dublin Bus/Evening Herald Blue Star hurling XV.[15]

Football

In 2006, Connolly has performed consistently well for St Vincents who qualified for the Dublin senior club football championship final against UCD. Connolly scored a total of 0-05 points in the semi final of the championship against Na Fianna.Vincents were beaten in the final by UCD by 0-10 to 0-09 with Connolly scoring a point. Connolly has scored a total of 3-16 (0-3f) in the Dublin Senior Football Championship so far this year. Connolly was named on the 2006 Dublin Bus/Evening Herald Blue Star football XV at right half-forward.[16] Diarmuid won his first Dublin Senior Football Championship medal with St Vincents in 2007, scoring 0-03 in the final against St Brigids at Parnell Park. Diarmuid then went on to win the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship final against Tyrrellspass of Westmeath.[17] Diarmuid won the 2008 All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship with St Vincents as Man of the Match in a hard fought game.^[3]
