University Hospital, New Orleans

University Hospital, New Orleans

University Hospital is one of two teaching hospitals which are part of the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans (MCLNO).

Organization.

University Hospital is one of several teaching hospitals around the state of Louisiana administered by the Louisiana State University System.

University Hospital is located in the New Orleans Hospital District. It is adjacent to the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans LSUHSC-NO, also known as the LSU Medical School in New Orleans. The address is 2021 Perdido Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70112-1352. Phone: (504) 903.3000.

History.

University Hospital was previously known as Hôtel-Dieu (french for House of God) which was operated by the Daughters of Charity. It was purchased by the Louisiana State University System in 1991, who converted it into a teaching hospital for the adjacent medical school, which it also oversees.

Like its sister hospital, Charity Hospital, University Hospital sustained severe flood damage during Hurricane Katrina, and its patients were evacuated by boat and helicopter after the storm. However, the hospital has been extensively renovated and was reopened 20 November 2006. Although staff shortages and other limitations have held available capacity to only 85 out of 575 beds, the reopening has been seen by many as a turning point for New Orleans, having had a severe shortage of emergency care since Katrina.
