Samuel Orgelbrand

Samuel Orgelbrand (1810-1868) was one of the most prominent Polish-Jewish publishers of the 19th century. The person to discover the works of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, he was also the publisher of the "Encyklopedia Powszechna" (1859-1868), the first true modern Polish language encyclopedia [http://www.library.uiuc.edu/spx/class/Encyclopedias/Poland/polency.htm] .

Biography

Samuel Orgelbrand was born in 1810 in Warsaw. In 1829 he published his first book, a translation of a work by Thomas Campbell. In 1836 he opened his bookstore. In 1840, a library.
