Mathew Carey Lea (1823–1897) was Philadelphia-born American chemist.
He was the son of the naturalist and publisher Isaac Lea and the brother of the Henry Charles Lea, a historian.
He devoted himself chiefly to the chemistry of photography, to which he made a number of important contributions.[1] His publications include numerous papers on the chemical action of light and an excellent Manual of Photography (second edition revised and enlarged, 1871). He is also known for his development of Carey Lea Silver, a photochemical, still in use today.[citation needed]
