The Know Theatre of Cincinnati is a theatre located in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio, that produces cultural and contemporary theatre, with an emphasis on making theatre accessible to the surrounding community. The Know is located at 1120 Jackson Street.

History

Prior to 2006, The Know Theatre of Cincinnati was known as the Know Theatre Tribe and was housed at Gabriel's Corner Church.

The company traces its roots to fall of 1997 when Jay B. Kalagayan brought together a group of seven actors to perform in a local bookstore. In the initial performance, their costumes and props held in a single trunk. The Know Theatre Tribe was officially founded that summer.

The Know Theatre is best known for its 2003 production of Terrence McNally's play "Corpus Christi". The production drew praise by winning a 2003 Post-Corbett Award and drew protests from religious groups, including a letter writing campaign in which over 20,000 post cards were mailed to the theatre.

In 2004, Know Theatre hired Artistic Director Jason Bruffy, founder of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival and former company manager of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. His leadership enabled immense growth in Know Theatre’s artistry and prominence, culminating in 2006 when Know Theatre took up residence in its first permanent home and merged with the Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

In 2006, the company moved into its second permanent home at 1120 Jackson Street, and changed its name to Know Theatre of Cincinnati. The intent of this name change was both to acknowledge the city in which the company operates and to signify that its nomadic “tribe” days were over. Know Theatre maintains a position at the forefront of contemporary, multicultural and provocative arts in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
