Gholam-Hossein Saedi

Gholām-Hossein Sā'edi, MD ( _fa. غلامحسین ساعدی) (January 4, 1936 — November 23, 1985), [13 Day 1314 — 2 Azar 1364 AH.] alias Gohar Morād [According to Abdol-Ali Dast'gheyb (literary critic), "Gohar Morād" is the name of one of the mystic works by Hazin Lāhiji. In an interview Sā'edi has however mentioned that he had seen the name "Gohar Marād" on the gravestone of a woman, died untimely, in a disused cemetery in the backyard of their home in Tabriz. It was on this occasion that he had decided to use "Gohar Morād" as his pen-name. ] (گوهر مراد), was an Iranian Azari socialist novelist and playwright best known for the screenplay of the celebrated Iranian movie "Gāv" (The Cow). He was one of the first modern playwrights and short-story writers of Iran.

Life

Gholām-Hossein Sā'edi was born in Tabriz. He became involved in political activities very early in life (at the age of 16), when he began working as a journalist in the socialist newspapers published in Iran's Azarbaijan province. He was arrested for a short period of time during the coup d'état of 19 August 1953. In 1963 he graduated from University of Tabriz in medicine. In 1966 he began his writing career with short stories and plays which before long were being staged in some theatres of Tehran. Years later, he wrote two screenplays for two distinguished film directors, Dariush Mehrjui and Nasser Taghvaee, namely that of "Gāv", 1969, and of "Tranquility in the Presence of Others", 1973, respectively. [The story underlying "Gāv" is the story number four in Sā'edi's book "Azā'dārān-e Bayal" (عزاداران بَیَل — The Mourners of Bayal) which consists of eight short related stories. In 1974 Sā'edi was arrested by the Pahlavi régime for his political activities. After one year of confinement in prison he was released, however he had to be admitted to a hospital upon release. In 1975 he wrote the screenplay for Dariush Mehrjui's "Dāyereh-ye Minā" (aka "The Cycle"), 1975, which was released in 1978.
