Caroline Unger

Caroline Unger (October 28, 1803-March 23, 1877) was an Austrian contralto. Born in Vienna, she studied in Italy; among her teachers were Aloysia Weber Lange and Domenico Ronconi. Her stage debut, in her native city, came in 1821, when she performed in "Cosi fan tutte". Three years later she sang in the first performances of Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and "Missa Solemnis". She performed a great deal in Italy; among the operas written for her were Vincenzo Bellini's "La straniera", Gaetano Donizetti's "Maria di Rudenz" and "Parisana", and Saverio Mercadante's "Le due illustre rivali". Unger had a great success at the Théâtre des Italiens in Paris in 1833. In 1841 she married François Sabatier and retired from the stage.

Unger died in Florence in 1877.
