Wii Series

Wii Series

Wii Series is a term used to refer to a series of games released for Nintendo's Wii console, designed to appeal to a wide audience extended beyond the traditional gamer demographic. On the European market, "Wii Sports", "Wii Play", and "Wii Fit" have been retroactively added to the Touch! Generations series of games.

Development

The games follow a template arrived at by Nintendo during development of the first Wii Series game "Wii Sports". Each is a collection of several simple games, designed to take the focus off of graphical ability, but have depth in gameplay.

In addition, the Wii Series games notably use the system's Miis as playable characters or otherwise uses an avatar of the selected Mii for the respective player.

The games are similar to collections of minigames, however, Satoru Iwata stressed the differences between minigame collections and what Nintendo was trying to do with the Wii Sports:

List of games

*"Wii Sports" is a collection of five sports games: Tennis, Baseball, Golf, Bowling, and Boxing. It was included as a pack-in game with the console in all regions excluding Japan and Korea.
*"Wii Play" is a collection of nine games, each designed for two players: Table Tennis, Laser Hockey, Fishing, Find Mii, Pose Mii, Shooting Range, Billiards, Charge!, and Tanks! "Wii Play" is bundled with a Wii Remote.
*"Wii Fit" is a game designed to guide players through aerobic exercises. The game uses the Wii Balance Board.
*"Wii Chess" is the simplest title in the series so far, based on the popular board game. It is the first game in the Wii Series to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Upcoming games

*"Wii Music" Features a collection of games built around simulating musical instruments with the Wii Remote. The entire list of games included is yet to be released. However two games, "Drums" and "Orchestra" were demonstrated at the Tokyo Game Show 2005. Nintendo has finally unveiled its long talked-up Wii music game, titled Wii Music, which has you using the Nunchuck and Wii Remote in time with button presses to contol a six-person band. In single-player you can either control the whole band or have the CPU fill up the extra slots, and of course four-player multiplayer is the biggest touting point. 60+ instruments are lined up for the final game, which is due in Japan and the US (and probably Europe) this year.

*"Wii Sports Resort" is the sequel to Wii Sports. It was announced on the 15th of July at E3. It uses the MotionPlus accessory. [ [http://www.videogamer.com/news/15-07-2008-8828.html Wii Sports Resort to use MotionPlus - Wii Sports for Wii News - VideoGamer.com ] ]

Reception

"Wii Sports", "Wii Play" and "Wii Fit" are the only Wii Series titles released world-wide. "Wii Sports" and "Wii Play" were the first two games for a seventh generation home consoles to sell more than 10 million units worldwide, and Wii Sports already breached the 20 million mark.cite web |url=http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2008/080425e.pdf#page=6 |title=Financial Results Briefing for Fiscal Year Ended March 2008 |publisher=Nintendo |date=2008-04-25 |accessdate=2008-04-25 |pages=6 |format=PDF] Although most of the "Wii Sports" sales comes from bundled copies, even more than a year after their launch, both games are featured among the best-selling video games throughout the world.

Even before being released outside Japan, "Wii Fit" sold more than 1 million copies in less than a month.
