Greenhouse Schools Project

Greenhouse Schools Project is a charity that works to transform the lives of young people aged 11-16 by engaging them in sport and art activities. We especially target those who may not otherwise have access to these opportunities including those who are living with a learning or physical disability. Greenhouse work with thousands of young people each week throughout London and we also have two programmes in Wales.

Greenhouse believes that participation in sports provides a powerful opportunity for vulnerable young people to learn critical life and social skills. In addition to improved fitness, Greenhouse programmes help young people to learn teamwork, to increase their self confidence and self esteem, and to establish positive attitudes towards education and skills. associated benefits include improved school attendance and educational development and performance.

Greenhouse was founded following a highly successful pilot project in August 2002 in which it used the facilities of St Pauls’ Boys’ School to provide a holiday multisports programme for young people from the local Castelnau Estate. Since then, Greenhouse has grown rapidly in order to meet the increasing demand for its programmes. Greenhouse today employs approximately 20 full time coaches and 50 part time coaches, providing sports and special needs programmes in over 20 schools throughout some of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods in London. As part of its programmes, Greenhouse runs a football club in Southwark with 380 members, full time table tennis programmes in 14 different schools, multi-sport programmes in 11 different schools during term time, weekends and holidays, and special needs programmes every day during term time in three different schools and in St Pauls’ Girls’ School during weekends.

Greenhouse’s fully qualified and trained coaches teach football, swimming, table tennis, trampolining, street dance, and a number of other sports to thousands of young people per week. For many of the young people, this is the first coaching they have received in these sports.
