Area codes 416 and 647

Area code 416 is one of the original 86 area codes from 1947, and currently serves the single rate centre of Toronto, Ontario. It has been split twice: the western portion of 416 became area code 519 in 1953, and in 1993 the remaining portion of 416 outside of Metropolitan Toronto (now Toronto) became 905.

In 2001, 416 was overlaid with area code 647. All calls were required to be dialed with ten digits since the introduction of the overlay. It was Canada's first overlay code; a geographic split was impossible due to the high population density and lack of a well-defined boundary to split on.

Along with the neighboring 905, 416 officially became "exhausted" in November, 2005. As a result, all new central office prefixes will be assigned in NPA 647, as there are no longer any available prefixes in 416. At the current rate of growth, a third area code is expected to be required sometime around 2010.

The incumbent local exchange carrier in 416/647 is Bell Canada; the last independent company in the previous 416 area code region was acquired by Bell Canada around the year 1980.

416 in popular culture

In the Greater Toronto Area, to be a "416er" means that one resides within the City of Toronto proper, while "905ers" live in the suburbs. The term "the 416" is also used to describe the area within Toronto proper, while the suburbs are referred to as "the 905" or "the 905 belt" (in this use the term does not include the more distant parts of area code 905, such as Niagara Falls).

Canadian rapper Maestro rendered homage to the area code in his song "416/905 (TO Party Anthem)".

In The Munsters episode "A Visit from Johann", the Happy Valley Lodge is said to be in the 416 area code.Fact|date=December 2007 At that time, what is now 905 area code was part of 416. The hamlet of Happy Valley exists, and is part of King Township, which was part of the 416 area code at the time.
