The Tolkien Society

The Tolkien Society

The Tolkien Society is an educational charity, formed in 1969, dedicated to furthering interest in the life and works of J. R. R. Tolkien, CBE, the author of "The Hobbit", "The Lord of the Rings", "The Silmarillion" and other works of fiction and philological study.

The Tolkien Society is based in the UK, but has a worldwide membership. It works closely with other literary societies with an interest in Tolkien, and dual membership is common. The society publishes a regular bulletin called "Amon Hen", with articles, artwork and occasional fiction.

The society has three regular UK gatherings: an Annual General Meeting and Dinner; a Seminar with a mix of serious and lighthearted talks; and the "Oxonmoot".

Mallorn

"Mallorn" is an annual journal produced by and for members of The Tolkien Society. It consists of long articles studying aspects of Tolkien's work, plus some artwork. The name is a reference to the Mallorn tree and an illustration of such a tree appears on the front of each issue. In the past it was issued every autumn, but since 2003 has been released in mid-summer. It is printed on size A4 paper.

The "Mallorn" accepts submissions of prose, verse, letters, and artwork.

Oxonmoot

"Oxonmoot" is a regular September gathering organised by the British Tolkien Society.

The event takes place in Oxford. Its name combines "Oxon," an abbreviation of the Latin term for Oxford, with "moot", the Anglo-Saxon term for a meeting. It includes talks, slide shows and an evening party with a costume masquerade. The gathering also includes a Sunday morning visit to Tolkien's grave at Wolvercote Cemetery.
