Barooga is a border town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, situated just north of the Murray River which forms the border with
Victoria. It is located in the Berrigan Shire Council Local Government Area. At the 2006 census, Barooga had a population of 1,655.Census 2001 AUS

Barooga is a mainly residential area and most of its commercial and industrial needs are met in its twin city of Cobram, located on the other side of the Murray River.

History

Attractions

Being only two and a half hours drive from Melbourne, Barooga is a popular holiday destination because it offers two registered clubs, a 36-hole golf course and river attractions and also a large Botanical Garden.Other attractions includea twenty metre swing bridge,Quicks Beach,Numerous Walking Tracks and theBarooga Markerts.

Education

Barooga Public School caters for primary school students only. High School students must cross the river to Cobram. The Barooga Public School follows Victorian, rather than New South Wales school holidays.

Unusually for a town in New South Wales, Barooga more probably because of its small size rather than its twin town linkage with Cobram has the postcode 3644, that is a postcode beginning with "3", which ordinarily signifies a location in Victoria. Other twin towns such as Albury and Wodonga, Euston and Robinvale, and Barham and Koondrook do not share postcodes.

There are many landmarks in Barooga including the famous heritage street lights in the main street, the little white old church on top of the hill and the historic Barooga Football Oval.

Barooga has a Australian rules football team in the Murray Football League called the Barooga Hawks, a cricket team in the Murray Valley Cricket Association and has a 36 hole golf course as well as varoius other sporting clubs including soccer, netball, tennis, table tennis and bowls.

Shopping

Barooga has a little shopping strip known to the locals as 'Barooga Mall'. There is an IGA, post office, bakery, clearance shop, hairdresser, service centre, air conditioning shop and a real estate agent.

When dining out there is the Barooga Hotel, the Golf Club and the Barooga Sporties.
