Yuan-Cheng Fung

Yuan-Cheng Bert Fung (born 1919) is a modern scientist, regarded as a founding figure of bioengineering and the "Founder of Modern Biomechanics" [ [http://www.techscience.com/mcb_pdf/v1n1/pdf/184288277842.pdf YC “Bert” Fung: The Father of Modern Biomechanics (pdf)] ] . He was born in Jiangsu Province, China in 1919. He earned a Bachelor's degree in 1941 and a Master's degree in 1943 from the National Central University of China, and earned a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in the United States in 1948. He is a professor emeritus at the University of California, San Diego.

He is the author of numerous books including Foundations of Solid Mechanics, Continuum Mechanics, and a series of books on Biomechanics.

He is also one of the principal founders of the Journal of Biomechanics.

He is well known for Fung's Law.

Fung's law in 1-D is written:

:sigma+eta=exp(alpha [lambda-1] )

Fung's famous exponential strain energy function (in 3-D) is ρw = c exp(Q), Q is a quadratic form of strains.

He was a past chair of the ASME International Applied Mechanics Division, and was the 1991 recipient of the Timoshenko Medal.
