Martin Kampmann Frederiksen (born April 17, 1982) is a Danish mixed martial artist who is currently fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. and trains at the Xtreme Couture gym. He is known for his precise strikes and his quick submissions.

MMA career

He is currently fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where he made his debut at UFC Fight Night 6 as a late replacement for Kalib Starnes.[2] In his debut fight with the UFC, Kampmann defeated opponent Crafton Wallace by first-round submission. His next victory came by way of a unanimous decision over Thales Leites in The Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale on November 11, 2006. At UFC 68, he defeated Drew McFedries by arm-triangle choke in the first round.

His next UFC fight was scheduled for UFC 72 against Rich "Ace" Franklin, but he was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury. Kampmann returned from his injury at UFC 85, where he defeated Jorge Rivera by Guillotine Choke at 2:44 in the first round.

All of Kampmann's first fifteen fights were at the 185 lb limit. After losing to Nate Marquardt at UFC 88, Kampmann announced that he would drop down to the welterweight division (170 lbs). He made his Welterweight debut at UFC 93 defeating Alexandre Barros by second round TKO. Kampmann defeated the last WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit in a closely contested split decision victory in the main event at UFC Fight Night 18.

Kampmann was to fight Mike Swick on September 19, 2009 at UFC 103. The winner was to receive a title shot against Georges St. Pierre.[3] On September 4, it was announced that Mike Swick had suffered an injury while training for his upcoming bout with Kampmann. Paul Daley replaced Swick for the fight. With Swick pulling out, the fight was not for the No. 1 contender spot anymore. Kampmann lost the fight via TKO due to strikes.[4]

Kampmann was expected to face Rory Markham on January 2, 2010 at UFC 108 however, on December 14 this fight was called off because Markham received a knee injury during training.[5] Instead Kampmann fought Jacob Volkmann on the card and won via first round submission using a modified guillotine choke that Kampmann calls the Deathchoke.[6]

Kampmann was scheduled to face Ben Saunders at UFC 111: St-Pierre vs. Hardy.,[7] but was forced off the card with an injury. Kampmann was replaced by Jake Ellenberger.[8]

Kampmann's next fight was against Paulo Thiago at UFC 115 controlling and dominating him en route to a unanimous decision victory by the score of 30-27 on all three judges scorecards.

Kampmann faced former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields, who made his UFC debut on October 23, 2010 at UFC 121. He lost a close split decision to Shields.[9] Shields next fight after that was to challenge the Georges St.Pierre for the welterweight title.

Kampmann then lost a controversial, but close decision to Diego Sanchez on March 3, 2011 at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann in a bout that saw Kampmann outstrike Diego over 3 rounds (including dropping Sanchez with a punch in the 1st round), with Diego's relentless pace and aggression giving him the nod on all 3 scorecards. Kampmann stopped 14 out of Diego's 15 takedown attempts, and also out-landed him 79-51 in total strikes (according to FightMetric who scored the fight 29-28 Kampmann).[10] The bout earned Fight of the Night honors. It was later published that each fighter earned $160,000 bonus for fight of the night. (four times that nights bonus)[11]

Kampmann was expected to face John Howard on June 26, 2011 at UFC on Versus 4[12] However, Kampmann was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by Matt Brown[13]

Kampmann defeated Rick Story by unanimous decision on November 19, 2011 at UFC 139.[14] The fight was announced as a split decision for Kampmann, however, UFC president Dana White clarified at the post-fight press conference that all three judges had scored the match in favor of Martin Kampmann.[15]
