Charles Lloyd Jones

Charles Lloyd Jones

Sir Charles Lloyd Jones (28 May 1878 – 30 July 1958) was an Australian businessman and patron of the arts.

He was born in Sydney to Edward Lloyd Jones and Helen Ann Jones, and was grandson to the Welsh-born merchant David Jones.[citation needed] He attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London, England, but ultimately was unable to fulfil his ambition of becoming a professional artist.[citation needed] He trained as a tailor and worked in that profession for several years in England before returning to Australia in 1902.[citation needed]

He worked for his family's firm, David Jones Limited, as tailor, then advertising manager, director and ultimately company chairman. He oversaw a period of sustained success and expansion for David Jones Ltd.[citation needed]

He was the inaugural Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Commission 1932-34.

He was knighted in 1951.[1]

Jones is also remembered for founding the David Jones Art Gallery. The Sir Charles Lloyd Jones Memorial Prize was named in his honour.
