Twin ("Text WINdows") is a text-mode windowing environment written and maintained by Massimiliano Ghilardi; it draws and manages text windows on a text-mode display, like X11 does for graphical windows. It has a built-in window manager and terminal emulator, and can be used as server for remote clients in the same style as X11. It can display on Linux console, on X11 and inside itself.

History

The project originated as a MS-DOS program in 1993, but problems with multitasking on that platform brought further development to a halt. It only took up speed again when Massimiliano switched to Linux in 1999 and ported the project to his new platform. Features such as console emulation, networked server capability and X11 support were added. It is now available in a number of distributions.
