BBC Local Radio service for the Englishcounty ofKent . Launched in 1970 as BBC Radio Medway, originally serving the Medway Towns from Chatham. It gained its current name when operations expanded to Kent in 1983 as part of the BBC's policy of operating countywide stations. It broadcasts on
FM on 96.7 (West Kent, Wrotham transmitter), 97.6 (Folkestone area) and 104.2 (East Kent, Swingate transmitter) also 774 (Littlebourne) and 1602 (Rusthall) MW and DAB.Radio Medway used to be at 30 High Street Chatham and continued there for three years after its transition to Radio Kent. A former newspaper office, 30 High Street was subsequently named Media House. From 1986 it transferred to nearby Sun Pier, from where it broadcast in stereo for the first time.
In 2001 the station moved to The Great Hall, Mount Pleasant Road, Tunbridge Wells, closer to the centre of Kent, as part of a BBC initiative to increase its presence in the south east.
In line with most BBC Local Radio stations, Tunbridge Wells has two studios and a news production area. A small studio (called "the Wendy House" because of its size) still exists close to the former Sun Pier studios in Chatham. Additional news studios (in Canterbury at Christ Church College and at the Dover District Council offices in Whitfield) are used by district reporters, and there is a radio car for outside broadcasts.
The managing editor is Paul Leaper.
Current daily line up from breakfast onwards includes John Warnett, Dominic King, Pat Marsh, Andy Garland and Roger Day.There is also a BBC Kent Introducing show broadcast on Sunday nights, which is presented by James Bursey and Tom Kirkby and aimed at a younger audience than the rest of the station's programming. The show is part of the
BBC Introducing project which is dedicated to showcasing new music from around the UK.External links
