Paulina Tayler

Paulina Tayler

Paulina Tayler was an early farmer and leading citizen of Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Born in Quebec, Canada, Paulina Edy married Rueben Tayler, a captain in the Canadian militia, in 1820. In 1838, the couple moved to Chicago, which had been incorporated as a city only a year earlier. Although Chicago was a "city" in name, there was plenty of farmland available within the city limits.

The Taylers farmed for many years, and eventually Reuben Tayler entered Chicago's booming real estate business. It was in this field that the family fortune was made, and as leading citizens of Chicago, the Taylers became involved in improving the city in a variety of ways.

Members of the Episcopal Church, the Taylers had four children: three daughters and a son.

Paulina Street at 1700 west in Chicago is named for Paulina Tayler.

Reuben Tayler donated Union Park on the near west of Chicago between Ashland and Paulina to the city of Chicago and the streets were named after he and his wife. A later mayor of Chicago who came from Ashland, Kentucky renamed Reuben Street to Ashland Avenue. Reueben Tayler was for twenty years the senior warden of the Episcopal Church of the Atonement located across the street from Union Park. Paulina Tayler died in childbirth but gave birth to a daughter Sophia who was later known as Sophia Tayler Griswold.
