Lochrin

Lochrin

Lochrin is a small area in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, UK] . It is in the south-west corner of the city centre, part of the Tollcross area. Lochrin contains a wide mixture of retail shops, leisure facilities, other businesses and tenement housing. Major new office and residential developments are replacing some of the older buildings and land vacated by an Arnold Clark (formerly Rootes) car showroom.

The basins which were at the end of the Union Canal were filled in after the closure of the canal as a commercial enterprise in the 1930s. The modern end of the canal is still at the centre of the area and is referred to as the Lochrin Basin. The area is at present undergoing major reconstruction and is known as Edinburgh Quay and Edinburgh Canal Quarter.

There are building developments taking place, on sites known as 'Freer Street', 'Leamington Wharf', and 'Lochrin Square'/'St Marks Quay' ['Unioncanal' community website [http://unioncanal.wikidot.com/developments] (September 2008)] .
