Chandler's family

Charles Bing is the father of Chandler Bing. He divorced Chandler's mother Nora Tyler Bing after admitting he was gay. He and Nora Bing told Chandler they were separating after Thanksgiving dinner. By that time—Chandler was seven years old— his father had an affair with the pool boy. Since then was a drag queen and even attended Chandler's high school swimming events dressed as a different starlet each time. Chandler mentions that he slept with a Mr Garibaldi. He now has a show in Las Vegas under the name "Viva Las Gaygas" and performs under the pseudonym "Helena Handbasket" at The Four Queens, where Mr Garibaldi accompanies him at the piano. According to Ross, Charles once "put on a black cocktail dress and asked him up to a hotel room", Chandler also mentions him in The One with the Dollhouse when Phoebe's self made dollhouse has lights and blows bubbles "hey my fathers house does that!"

Chandler and his dad have long been estranged as is revealed in The One with Chandler's Dad at the time of his wedding to Monica, when it is mentioned that the two "haven't seen each other in years". However, Chandler confesses to Monica that his dad tried to contact him numerous times by phone, letters and even came to visit him in New York. They never saw each other though, as Chandler pretended each time to be too busy.

In The One with Chandler's Dad, Monica convinces Chandler to invite Charles to the wedding, which he does (in The One with Chandler And Monica's Wedding, Part Two). He walks his son down the aisle in a black dress.

Nora Tyler Bing is the mother of Chandler Bing and ex-wife to Charles Bing. A graphic adult novelist, she divorced her husband when she learned of his sexuality and his affair with the pool boy when Chandler is very young (Chandler hates Thanksgiving and all Thanksgiving food because they told him they were separating at Thanksgiving dinner). Charles Bing claims he is leaving Nora for their house boy. Their divorce triggered Chandler to start using humor as a defense mechanism. In the One with Mrs Bing she appeared on TV with her new book and revealed gave Chandler his first condom. She once tried to seduce Ross Geller; when Chandler found out, he declared "You kissed my best Ross! or... something to that effect". She appeared again at Chandler's wedding where she came face to face with her ex-husband who was now a drag queen. At the wedding reception she introduces Chandler to her new boyfriend and Broadway director, Dennis Phillips, much to Joey's delight. She has been married four times.

Jack Geller is the father of Ross Geller and Monica Geller and husband to Judy Geller. He is best known for his ill-timed, inappropriate comments, such as addressing a character while in London as a "thieving, would-be-speaking-German-if-it-weren't-for-us, cheap little man". He led his in-laws to believe that he's an attorney, although his line of work is never defined. He secretly smoked cigarettes, claiming that the cigarettes Ross found around the house were Judy's.

Although both Jack Geller and Judy Geller were criticized for favoring Ross Geller over Monica Geller, Jack was the more sympathetic of the two. He constantly referred to Monica as Harmonica. When Monica broke up with serious boyfriend Richard Burke, he consoled her, although he had previously disapproved of her dating his long-time best friend, a man twenty-one years her senior. He also gave her his Porsche, after all objects of her childhood memories were ruined by a flood. In "The Last One", Monica names her new baby son after her father, though it is against the Jewish custom of naming children only after relatives who are dead.

Judith "Judy" Geller is the mother of Ross Geller and Monica Geller and wife to Jack Geller. She has one sister, Lilian, played by Elinor Donahue. She is critical of Monica, in particular her usual lack of a boyfriend and she favors Ross. She is the least sympathetic of the two. Her intense, albeit well-meant, criticism of Monica may in some way be responsible for Monica's obsessive sense of cleanliness and order. Indeed it's clear that despite their problems, Monica and Judy are extremely similar. As Judy said to Monica in The One Where Nana Dies Twice, Nana was the same way to Judy as Judy is to Monica (although Judy was thinking she hadn't turned out like Nana). In The One With The Fake Monica, Monica tells her not to ask about her career, finance, and love. She also tends to lack the skill of babysitting, in The One With Phoebe's Birthday Dinner, when Rachel worried about Emma must tell Judy to stop drinking wine and pick up Emma's sock. Also after Chandler talks about his worst nightmare (when he's having sex and he pictures his mom's face instead of his girlfriend's) in The One With The Princess Leia Fantasy, Rachel dresses up as Princess Leia and Ross pictures Judy's face instead of Rachel's.

Dr. Leonard Green, a cardiologist, is Rachel's father. He is an overbearing perfectionist who demands perfection from his children. He and his wife divorced shortly after Rachel left her unfaithful fiancé, Barry the orthodontist, at the altar (Rachel found out when her mother came to visit in The One With The Lesbian Wedding. Her mother told Rachel, "You didn't marry your Barry, honey, but I married mine." While Dr. Green and Rachel have a fairly fractious relationship, he said to his friends and youngest daughter Jill (but not to Rachel) that Rachel is the only one of his children of whom he is proud.

Dr. Green detests Ross and is highly critical of him, especially after he finds out Ross got Rachel pregnant, but would not marry her. Ron Leibman once said of his character: "I have won a Tony... but everyone asks, 'Aren't you Rachel's Dad?'"

* Dr. Green scared a young Rachel with smoker's lungs yet smoked himself , perhaps leading to his heart attack.
* The fact that Dr. Green is a doctor was first mentioned in The One With The Birth, Chandler said to Rachel, "What is it with you and doctors? Is your dad, like, a doctor?" Rachel replied, "Yeah. Why?"
* He appeared in the episode "The One with the Two Parties", where he drops by to wish his daughter a happy birthday. However, this kind gesture is ruined when he seizes the opportunity to explain his reasons for the divorce to Rachel.
* In "The One with the Stripper," Dr. Green learns that Rachel is pregnant.
* Dr. Green was last featured in "The One Where Joey Speaks French," wherein he has a heart attack.

Sandra Green is Rachel's mother. Sandra initially displays many of Rachel's characteristics before Rachel set out on her own, including dependence on others for money, lack of respect for people in low-wage jobs, and a lenient attitude towards marriage. However, upon seeing Rachel happy as an independent woman, Sandra says that she also desires to be independent.

In her first appearance, Sandra asks Monica and Rachel if they have any marijuana, and "What's new in sex?" as part of celebrating her separation from estranged husband, Dr. Green. Later, Sandra dances with a "wonderfully large woman" at Carol (Ross' first wife) and Susan's lesbian wedding, noting that while it wasn't necessarily something she would pursue, it was "Nice to know I have options". In the same episode, upon seeing the Ugly Naked Guy, Sandra comments on his actions, referring to him as an "unattractive nude man".

In Season 8, Monica throws a baby shower for Rachel, and invites Rachel's sisters, but forgets to invite Sandra. Sandra is angry with Monica during the shower, Monica slams the door on Sandra as she leaves, then re-opens the door and chases after Sandra, apologizing.

One of the in-jokes of her character was that she was played by Marlo Thomas, who, when younger, had starred in That Girl, one of the first sitcoms that detailed a single female's life in the city. Her ignorance of city or independent, single life is in contrast to her groundbreaking first series."Played by Marlo Thomas"

Amy Green

Amy Green is one of Rachel's sisters. Amy visits Rachel twice, both times because of boyfriend problems. She repeatedly calls Emma, Rachel and Ross' daughter, by wrong names, Emmette, Ella and Emily. The first time Amy sees Emma, Amy declares "You know what would be great? If you guys died!", thinking she would inherit Emma, and her trials and tribulations would be made into a movie (similar to "Baby Boom" with Diane Keaton). Amy later babysits "Ella" and pierces her ears. Rachel and Ross flip out, and Rachel forces Amy to move out, but before Amy leaves, Rachel and Amy make up by gossiping. Another notable thing is that whereas Joey hits on Jill when Jill first shows up, he freaks out and leaves the room when Amy appears (much like he does when Janice is around). Joey's feelings about Amy are well summed up by his exclamation, "She may be the hottest girl I've ever hated!" "Played by Christina Applegate"

Jill Green

Jill Green is one of Rachel's sisters. Jill comes to the apartment looking for Rachel, attempting to start a new life, as Rachel did. Though their father, Dr. Green, has cut off Jill from her enormous spending, Jill can't break the habit and continues excessive shopping. Worse yet, she dates Ross to spite Rachel. In a later episode featuring Rachel's other sister Amy, it is revealed that Jill has been on Atkin's Diet, but "carbs found her". Amy tells Rachel Jill has gained weight in her "ass and face" and her real food weakness is garlic bread. Despite conflicts, Rachel gets along with Jill better than she does with Amy."Played by Reese Witherspoon"

Phoebe's Family

Frank Buffay Sr.

Often mentioned, Frank Buffay Sr. walked out on his twins Phoebe and Ursula, and later his son Frank Jr. Frank Sr. appears only once, when Phoebe's adoptive grandmother (Lily's mother) dies. Phoebe confronts Frank Sr. and it's obvious that he has commitment phobia. However, he explains to Phoebe that the reason he left was that he felt he was a horrible father to her and could never make her stop crying as an infant--even when he sang songs; one of these songs is "Sleepy Girl", which is the same tune that Phoebe has used for her famous "Smelly Cat." He only appeared in "The One With Joey's Bag."

Frank Buffay Jr.

Frank Buffay Jr. is Phoebe and Ursula's half brother. Phoebe discovered Frank on one of her attempts to find her father, Frank Sr., who walked out on her and her twin sister when they were children. Frank Sr. also left Frank Jr.'s family, as Phoebe finds out. Frank Jr. has a punctured lung, was arrested for stealing birds' eggs, likes to melt things, and owned a dog named "Tumor". He also believed that 'massage parlor' was a euphemism for brothel, thereby wrongly presuming his sister, Phoebe, was a prostitute.

Frank announces to Phoebe that he is dating his home economics teacher, Alice (played by Debra Jo Rupp), in season three. He accidentally continues to call Alice 'Mrs. Knight'. Although at first apprehensive, Phoebe realizes that the two are genuinely in love.

In the episode "The One With Phoebe's Uterus", Frank is married to Alice. They ask Phoebe if she would act as a surrogate mother, since they are desperate to have children yet are unable to conceive. She agrees and later gives birth to triplets in the episode "The One Hundredth". Frank and Alice name their daughter Leslie and their first son Frank Junior Junior. When Chandler asks if the name should be Frank the Third, Alice replies with "don't get me started". They tell Phoebe that she can name their third baby, who is initially identified as a boy. Chandler and Joey bicker about which one of them the baby should be named after. Joey tells Chandler that "Chandler" is a "non-name", at which point Chandler decides to change his name. Phoebe decides to name the third baby after Chandler, because she feels bad for him and so that Chandler will not change his name. Upon giving birth to baby Chandler, they realize that the third infant is actually a female. Frank Jr. runs into the hospital waiting room, shouting "Chandler's a girl! Chandler's a girl!", which Chandler says reminds him of kindergarten. Despite the baby not having the gender that was expected, they decide to name her Chandler anyway, much to her namesake's irritation.

Frank reappears in a later season and tries to convince Phoebe to take one of the triplets, because he claims to have not slept in four years. For arguments sake, they discuss which of the children Phoebe will take. She asks for Frank Jr. Jr., but Frank decides that Frank Jr. Jr. is too funny and that she can't take him. She then asks for Leslie, but he says no, because she is the only one of the triplets who knows how to burp the alphabet. Phoebe then suggests Chandler, to which Frank replies, 'Oh, no, no, you can't have Chandler, no. No, no. She's my little genius. I got big hopes for her. She's gonna be a doctor or a realtor.' He then realizes that he has run out of children to give up and that he loves his children way too much to ever give any of them away. "Played by Giovanni Ribisi"

Note: Giovanni Ribisi also appeared in Season 2 (episode 6) as a stranger on the street who had dropped a condom in Phoebe's guitar case when she was playing on the street for money and later came back for it because he "needed it for an emergency". Later in Season 2 (episode 21), Giovanni reappears, but this time as Frank Jr. with very similar characteristics to the former character. However, it is impossible that both the condom guy and Frank Buffay Jr. are the same, because when the latter first appears, his sister takes him to see the Big Apple for the first time.

Ursula Buffay

Ursula Pamela Buffay originally appeared as a ditzy waitress in the sitcom "Mad About You", working at Paul and Jamie's favorite New York City restaurant, Riff's. When Lisa Kudrow was cast as Phoebe, who also lives in New York City, producers decided to have the character cross over into "Friends". Ursula's apartment is in SoHo while Phoebe and her friends live in the Village.

In "Mad About You", Ursula was a particularly inept waitress, often forgetting orders entirely. Her character was more fully developed in "Friends". Ursula often appeared cruel and hostile to twin Phoebe, who is still upset by the things Ursula did to her when they were young, for example, throwing her Judy Jetson thermos under a bus and stealing her first boyfriend. This drove a wedge between the sisters, and the estrangement continued into adulthood. Although Phoebe ended up homeless by her mid-teens, following the various deaths/abandonments/imprisonments of their parents, Ursula apparently did not; how the sisters came to be separated as minors was never revealed.

Naturally, Phoebe became worried when Ursula dated Joey. It was revealed that Ursula had always known the truth about her and Phoebe's parentage; she even claimed to hold a suicide note from their adoptive mother that revealed the identity of their birth mother. When Phoebe asked to see the note, Ursula showed Phoebe a note that she (Ursula) had hastily written up. In Ursula's word, her version "got the jist" of the original suicide note, which she had apparently lost in the interim. Ursula also sold Phoebe's birth certificate to a Swedish runaway; as a result, Phoebe does not know what her middle name is.

On one occasion, the character Jamie Buchman from "Mad About You" walks into Central Perk and confuses Phoebe with Ursula. Since Ursula is naturally forgetful, Jamie writes off Phoebe's genuine ignorance of who Jamie is as one of Ursula's quirks.

In "The One Where Chandler Can't Cry", it is revealed that Ursula works in the pornography industry, using her sister's first name so she was credited as Phoebe Buffay. She appeared in such films as "Buffay the Vampire Layer", "Sex Toy Story 2", "Lawrence of a Labia" (an actual adult film title), and "Inspect Her Gadget". Much of her earnings were stolen by Phoebe as revenge since Ursula had used her name for the films.

On the last episode of "Mad About You", it was revealed that Ursula will become the Governor of New York in the near future.

In Season 8 (episode 6) Ursula and her fiance, Eric (played by Sean Penn) attend a Halloween party thrown by Monica and Chandler. Pheobe discovers that Ursula has been lying to her fiance claiming that she is a teacher at the Top Secret School for the Children of Spies, that she was in the Peace Corps, saying "It wasn't a town when I got there, but it was a town when I left" and also that she doesn't smoke and is a part of a church group. Phoebe reveals this to Eric upon which he breaks up with Ursula and begins dating Phoebe (Season 8, episode 7)... however they soon break up because Eric has sex with Ursula thinking she is Phoebe.

Phoebe Abbott

Phoebe Abbott is Phoebe and Ursula Buffay's birth mother. Phoebe Buffay finds her mother living in a seaside house in Montauk, New York. Her two biggest passions are pottery and erotica—or "erotery", as Phoebe Buffay calls it. Mrs. Abbott also likes Beatles music, pizza, and puppies. When she learns that Phoebe (Buffay) intends to be a surrogate mother for Frank Jr. and Alice, she opposes the idea. She lends her daughter a Pug puppy with the intention of teaching her that giving up something you love (like a puppy) is very difficult and will be even harder if it is a child. The plan backfires when Frank Jr. and Alice fall in love with the puppy, and Phoebe (Buffay)—giving soul that she is—joyously gives it to them, to which her mother replies "but, that was my puppy".

Frank Jr Jr, Leslie, and Chandler

Frank Jr. Jr., Leslie and Chandler are Alice and Frank's children. Phoebe was the surrogate mother, giving birth to them in The One Hundredth. Frank Jr. Jr. is named after the father (Chandler: Wouldn't that make him Frank the third? Alice: Don't get me started!). Alice named Leslie. Chandler was named after Chandler, even though the baby was actually a girl. When the triplets turn five, they become very active and rowdy. They were unaware that Phoebe was their surrogate mother until Chandler unintentionally tells them in The One Where Ross is Fine

Joey's Family

Joseph Tribbiani Sr and Gloria Tribbiani

Joseph Tribbiani Sr is Joey's father. He has a pipe fitting business and lives with his wife Gloria in Queens. Both appeared in the episode "The One with the Boobies". Joseph Sr is also conducting a long-term extra-marital affair with a pet mortician named Ronni Rappelano. Although Joey disapproves of this state of affairs, he is forced to accept it when his mother reminds him how much happier his father is now that he has a "hobby", and that their marriage is much better due to Joseph Sr.'s shame about the affair and how he is that much more attentive.

In "The One with Ross's New Girlfriend", Chandler goes to Joey's tailor to have a pair of trousers altered. The tailor however, seems to take trouser altering as an excuse to inspect the crotch of his clients. At first, Joey is reluctant to believe what the tailor has done, but he is eventually convinced and calls his father to tell him about the situation.

Joseph Sr also appeared in an episode of "Joey", "Joey and the Dad", in which he flew to L. A. to attend the premiere of Joey's movie "Captured".

Joey's sisters

Joey has seven sisters - Gina, Tina, Dina, Mary-Angela, Mary-Therese, Veronica and Cookie. In the episode "The One Where Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister", all seven arrive at Chandler and Joey's apartment for Joey's birthday party, with Chandler getting drunk and fooling around with one of them, then not remembering which it was. It turned out to be Mary-Angela.

Dina appeared in "The One with Monica's Boots" where Joey learns that she is pregnant. She was played by Marla Sokoloff.

In "Joey", Joey's eldest sister Gina Tribbiani and her son Michael live with Joey in Los Angeles. The character was played by Drea de Matteo on "Joey", and by K.J. Steinberg on "Friends".

Ben's first name came from the janitor uniform that Phoebe donned when she, Susan and Ross were locked in a broom closet at the hospital during Carol's labor. Ben's surname is never specifically stated (it's either Ben Geller-Willick-Bunch, or Ben Geller). While Susan and Carol wanted Ben's name to be Ben Willick-Bunch, Ross wanted to be Ben Geller-Willick-Bunch so people would only say Ben Geller. He lives with Carol and her lesbian life partner, Susan. He appeared in thirteen episodes. He has a half-sister, Emma, and two adopted cousins, Jack and Erica.

The character was played as an infant by Michael Gunderson, by brothers Charles Thomas Allen and John Christoper Allen for 6 episodes between 1996 and 1999, and by Cole Sprouse, who plays Cody in "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody" for 7 episodes between 2000 and 2002.

Emma Geller-Green

Ross and Rachel's daughter. Rachel's pregnancy was originally revealed in the season finale of Season 7. Emma is born in "The One Where Rachel Has a Baby, Part Two." The name Emma was originally chosen by Monica as the name she wanted to use for her future daughter. Before deciding on "Emma", Ross and Rachel discussed several other names like "Delilah" (nixed because Rachel felt it made her sound like "a Biblical whore") and "Isabella." However, ironically, in a season 2 episode, Ross states he would name his daughter "Emily", but it is possible that Ross decided against this name after his failed disaster of a marriage to second wife Emily. While still living with Ross and Rachel, Emma laughs at her parents singing "Baby Got Back", Rachel is afraid to admit that she can not make her laugh any other way. Until they get into a fight and Rachel moves in with Joey, Emma lives with her parents. In the series finale, her parents reconcile, and it was hinted on "Joey" that all Joey's friends had wed and settled down.

Jack and Erica Bing

Twins Jack and Erica appear in the final episode, when biological mother Erica gave birth to two babies instead of the expected one, they were expecting one because when the docter read the sonogram he said "there are two hearts" Erica thinking the doctor meant her heart and the baby's told Monica and Chandler that she was only expecting one child. Chandler and Monica, unable to conceive, are selected by Erica to adopt the twins. Jack was named after his adoptive grandfather and Erica after her biological mother. They are shown in Apartment 20, with the rest of the group before leaving with Chandler and Monica to go live in their new home.

Gunther is the manager of the Central Perk coffee house, where the six main characters spent a great deal of their free time. Gunther is a background character for the first couple of seasons, until the character developed an unrequited crush on Rachel in the third season, which he kept to himself until the series finale, though his jealousy of Ross is made clear numerous times, most notably in "The One the Morning After" when he reveals to Rachel that Ross cheated on her (but they were on a break as Ross claimed). James Michael Tyler was cast as Gunther because he was the only extra who could competently work the coffee machine on the Central Perk set. Gunther appears in nearly every episode, but only occasionally calls attention to himself and almost never has a large role in the plot of an episode. During the episode where Joey is fired from "Days of Our Lives", Gunther revealed he also played a character killed off in a soap opera; "I was Bryce on "All My Children"." Tyler appears as Gunther in a co-host voice-over in the "Friends" trivia game for PS2, PC and Xbox, and in the board game "Friends: Scene It?".Gunther can also speak Dutch.

Susan Bunch is the lesbian life partner of Ross Geller's ex-wife Carol Willick. Susan is a vegetarian as stated in 'The One With The Dozen Lasangas'. Susan and Carol had an affair while Carol was married to Ross. Susan's occupation is unstated, though there's mention that she was helping shoot a mini pad commercial. Ross and Susan didn't get along well: Ross resented Susan for "stealing" Carol away from him; Susan resented Ross for his romantic history with Carol as well as his awkward behavior around her. Susan's father appears to be in the military and both her parents seem very supportive and accepting of her relationship with Carol. In "The One with the Birth", it emerges that Susan is frustrated by the fact that there is no official place for her in Ben's life - "Where do I fit in? There's Mother's Day, there's Father's Day... There's no Lesbian Lover Day!", to which Ross retorts "Every day is Lesbian Lover Day!" Following her wedding to Carol, Ross and Susan seem to be on better terms, as it was Ross who gave Carol the support necessary to go through with the wedding even though her parents refused to show up. Her final appearance was in the alternate reality episode of Season 6 where it is implied that no matter what, Carol and Susan were destined to be together (a recurring theme throughout the episode).

Mr. Heckles

Mr. Heckles lived in the apartment below Monica and Rachel. In his first appearance, he was credited simply as "The Weird Man". He often complained about the apparent noise that the two made (though seemingly they were not making any noise at all) by rapping on his apartment ceiling with a broom.

When he complains to Monica and Rachel, he usually starts his lines with "You're disturbing my..." Both of them reply "You don't have a..." but Heckles insists saying "I could have a...". Mr. Heckles also stole Marcel, and dressed him as a ballerina, insisting that he hadn't seen him.

During "The One Where Heckles Dies", Mr. Heckles dies while banging on the ceiling, and leaves all his worldly possessions to "the two noisy girls upstairs." During this episode, Chandler looks through Mr. Heckles' possessions and draws parallels between his life and Mr. Heckles'. It also emerges that the slightest noises could be heard (greatly amplified) from Mr. Heckles' apartment, thus revealing he wasn't unduly grumpy as originally portrayed.

Mr. Heckles appears again in a flashback, where it is revealed that his illusions were the main reason Joey became Chandler's roommate instead of a model photographer with a porn star sister.

Jasmine

Jasmine is one of Phoebe's coworkers at the massage parlor and is also Gunther's roommate. Her brother is Isaac from the copy place. She appeared in "The One With the Stoned Guy", "The One the Morning After", and "The One With Frank Jr."

Joanna

Joanna was Rachel's boss at Bloomingdale's. She dated Chandler in a few episodes and while he at first considers her "a big, dull dud" he eventually learns she is into bondage. In "The One With The Cuffs" Joanna handcuffs Chandler to her chair and leaves him handcuffed in her office. In "The One Where They're Going to Party", she was hit by a cab and died. Before Joanna died she had promised to promote Rachel and give her a raise and a new office. However Rachel learns that Joanna did not sign any papers or inform anyone about Rachel's promotion, therefore Rachel does not get promoted. A few episodes later, in "The One With Rachel's Crush", the department formerly headed by Joanna gets eliminated, causing Rachel to end up getting demoted to personal shopper instead.

Alice Knight Buffay

Alice Knight Buffay is the wife of Phoebe's half brother Frank Jr. She met Frank Jr. in one of her high school Home Economics classes she teaches. At first, Phoebe disapproved of the marriage because of the wide age gap between Alice and her brother, Alice being 44 and Frank being only 18. When Ross and Joey are told to talk Frank out of the marriage, Joey wrongly says: "You're 18, she's 44. Now, when you're 36, she's gonna be 88." However, Frank idly responds: "You think I don't know that?"Due to Debra Jo Rupp's commitments to "That 70's Show", Alice wasn't seen after that show started.

Estelle Leonard

Estelle Leonard is Joey Tribbiani's withered, smoking, acting agent. Although she did get Joey his breakout role as Dr. Drake Ramoray on the NBC soap opera "Days of our Lives", she was not very good at her job for the most part; most of Joey's screen roles were as extras with minimal - if any - lines. Once she even mistakenly thought Joey had left her and tried to sabotage his career, when, in fact, he was still her client. Amongst Estelle's other clients were an act with a 'pyramid of dogs' and Al Zeebooker, a man who eats paper. Estelle died during the tenth season. At the time of her death, her only two remaining clients were Joey and Al Zeebooker . Because Phoebe was worried about how Joey would take the news (since so much of his personal life was changing at the time) she impersonated Estelle until Joey found out about her death. Unfortunately for Phoebe, shortly after Joey received news of Estelle's death (from Zeebooker), Phoebe called him and impersonated her once again, giving Joey the impression that he had received a message from beyond the grave.

Marcel

Marcel was Ross Geller's pet capuchin monkey during the first season of the series. Ross donated him to the San Diego Zoo after Marcel became sexually aggressive. It was later learned that Marcel was stolen from the zoo, and Ross discovered he was the mascot for a beer company's commercials. They last saw Marcel on the set of "Outbreak 2: The Virus Takes Manhattan" (Katie, one of the monkeys that played Marcel, in fact played the monkey in "Outbreak"). Marcel had also developed an infatuation with electrical appliances, having changed the language on Monica's TV to Spanish, causing Ross to exclaim "How did he do this?". He also became obsessed with the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", and this is how Ross manages to see him again briefly (when Marcel is rich and famous) after being denied access to him by security.

The Chick and The Duck

The Chick and the Duck were a chick and a duck owned by Chandler Bing and Joey Tribbiani. In the episode "The One With a Chick. And a Duck.", Joey originally bought the chick from an animal sanctuary as a gift for Chandler after seeing—and misunderstanding—a news report about people who buy chicks and then find they cannot properly care for them. Phoebe encouraged Chandler to return the chick but Chandler, discovering that the chick was in danger of being euthanized, did not have the heart and returned home with the chick and a duck. It turned out that, after hitting a few bumps (such as getting the chick stuck in the VCR) the two were perfectly capable of caring for the birds, and they were well loved. A recurring gag throughout the series has Chandler and Joey treating the chick and the duck as their own children, a continuation of the earlier gag that Joey and Chandler acted like a married couple. At one point, Chandler punishes the duck for trying to eat the chick by sending him out to the hall; stating "You stay out here and think about what you did!" to which a surprised Ross and Rachel, who had just returned from the hospital, as Rachel had broken her rib previously in the episode, say "That's a duck", Chandler quickly retorts "THAT'S A BAD DUCK!" The birds have proven to be popular amongst audiences, especially for the family gag. When Chandler moved to Monica's apartment, it is revealed that Monica hates them but disguises it as an allergy which prevents them from visiting. Ironically, she can still stand near them in the other apartment.

Chandler named the chick "Yasmine", after Yasmine Bleeth, an actress on "Baywatch", a television program he and Joey frequently watched, though the chick later turns out to be a male when he grows into a rooster. In "The One With Ross's Thing", Joey and Chandler are discussing if the chick and the duck had a baby, Joey says "we could call it chuck!" (ch(ick)(d)uck), Chandler responds with "or, Dick" "(d(uck)(ch)ick).

After about Season 6 the animals disappeared (the duck was mentioned but not seen in Season 7), and in the final episode it emerged that they had died of old age some time ago, but Chandler and the rest of the group had lied to Joey to save his feelings, telling him that they had gone to a special farm where they were very happy but could not be visited.

Also in the final episode, Joey bought Chandler a new duckling and chick as a housewarming gift (Joey named them "Duck Jr." and "Chick Jr." respectively). In the end Joey kept them himself and, again after a few bumps (this time they got stuck in the foosball table), he even considered getting a goose, but Chandler quickly discouraged him, telling him he was "set with the poultry". The birds did not make an appearance on the "Friends" spinoff "Joey".

Ugly Naked Guy

Ugly Naked Guy has appeared on screen three times: once while he was suspected of being dead, in "The One with the Giant Poking Device", once with his back facing the camera, and once with Ross (who was also nude, and this scene was only in the DVD version of the episode). His actual name is not known, and never is mentioned. He was a bizarre hermit who obtained his nickname for being morbidly obese and highly unattractive, as well as carrying out household tasks in the nude, with the curtains open. He wasn't always called Ugly Naked Guy, though. In "The One with the Flashback", Phoebe referred to him as "Cute" Naked Guy, but commented that it was a shame he had been putting on a lot of weight recently. In "The One With the Lesbian Wedding" he is described by Rachel's mother as "an unattractive nude man".

Ugly Naked Guy lived in an apartment directly opposite and slightly below Rachel and Monica's apartment. Anyone in the girls' apartment could look directly into Ugly Naked Guy's apartment. Throughout the early years, the gang would look into Ugly Naked Guy's apartment and comment on his behavior and actions, such as when he got a Thighmaster or when he squashed his cat by accidentally sitting on it (to which Joey remarked "That poor cat never saw that big butt coming"). At one point the Friends saw him sleeping, and Phoebe thought a curse had killed him, so decided to construct a large poking device out of Joey and Chandler's chopstick collection to ensure he was not dead ("The One with the Giant Poking Device"). He also plays the cello, lights candles, which the gang's comments suggest burnt him, gets gravity boots, and sleeps in a hammock, right under the window.

In one episode it was announced that Ugly Naked Guy was moving out and subletting the apartment ("Ironically, many of his boxes appeared to be labeled "clothes"). This sparked a frenzy of bids, along with bribes. Ross Geller ended up acquiring the apartment by eating mini muffins naked with him in a desperate attempt to bond with the nudist, to the total shock and amusement of the rest of the gang looking from Rachel and Monica's apartment window. (This was the last time in which he appeared on screen):::"Joey: Hey, hey, check it out! Check it out! Ugly Naked Guy's got a naked friend!" ::"Rachel: Oh yeah! ...Oh my God! That's our friend! It's Naked Ross!"

Eddie Menuek

Eddie Menuek was in 3 episodes: "The One Where Eddie Moves In", "The One Where Dr. Ramoray Dies" and "The One Where Eddie Won't Go."

Eddie moved in with Chandler when Joey moved into his own spacious apartment, after he got a job as Dr. Drake Ramoray on 'Days of Our Lives', earning a high salary. Chandler and Eddie met at the supermarket where Eddie helped Chandler pick out a chorizo. Chandler later discovers they have nothing in common; Eddie hates "Baywatch", foosball and sport, steals mannequins from Macys and dehydrates fruit for fun. Chandler then meets Eddie's ex-girlfriend Tilly, who Eddie claims "ripped out my heart and smeared it all over my life", when she drops off Eddie's old, empty goldfish tank. Eddie, however, seeing Tilly and the empty tank, believes that Chandler slept with her and then killed his fish. Eddie replaces the fish with a Goldfish cracker, which he names Chandler. He later replaces it with a real goldfish and ends up shoving it in his pocket and storming out the door.

After Chandler has a few confrontations with Eddie, who steals the insoles from his shoes to spite him for the imagined affair, Chandler decides Eddie must go - the final provocative act for this being Eddie watching Chandler sleep every night, which a shocked Chandler discovers upon waking one night. After numerous attempts to make him leave, Chandler and Joey move all of Eddie's stuff out of the apartment and trick him into believing he never lived there.

Mr. Treeger

Mr. Treeger was the building superintendent at Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler's apartment building. His first appearance is in "The one Where Mr. Heckles dies", when the friends are cleaning Mr Heckles' apartment. He later appears in the second season holiday episode when Monica and Rachel's knob on the heater breaks off, causing their apartment to get very hot. He then, at the party, gets bribed by Ross to get the new knob sooner but he is sure he is making it clear 'It wont come in till Tuesday'. He also appears in season 4, "The One with the Ballroom Dancing", where Joey gets Rachel into trouble with him and he threatens to throw Monica and Rachel out of their apartment for illegal subletting (a fact made clear many times throughout the series, as Monica took control of and subletted the spare room of the apartment and continued living there even after her grandmother, the real lessor, passed away). In order to avoid this, Joey agrees to help Treeger to practice his ballroom dancing to impress a lady-friend. Although he is mentioned, he does not appear in the final episode. Mr. Treeger also appears in an episode of season 8 where it is revealed that he attends yoga class with Ross and does the "Namaste" to him.

Erica

Erica, from Ohio, is the young woman who gives birth to Chandler and Monica's twins. In "The Last One" (part 1) they name the boy Jack (after Monica's father) and the girl Erica (after her birth mother). When told she was going to have twins she said to Monica and Chandler, "Well they did say both heartbeats are strong and I thought well good cause I'm havin' a baby." When Monica and Chandler told Erica they were naming the girl after she responded with, "Wait that's just like my name." And later in that episode when they told Joey he responded, "Wasn't that pregnant girl's name Erica." and then Chandler says, "Yeah, it's a shame you didn't get to spend more time together."

Mindy Hunter-Farber

Introduced in season 1, Mindy was Rachel's maid-of-honor in the wedding with Barry, which Rachel walked out of (She had been having an affair with Barry). She married Barry in the season 2 finale in which Rachel was the maid-of-honor dressed—in Chandler's words—as "Little Bo Peep" and "Princess Bubble-Yum". They divorced in season 6 with Rachel saying to the others that Mindy caught Barry cheating on her with another woman. She was played by two different actresses in two different episodes.

When Rachel's boss asks her to take his niece Emily Waltham to the opera on the same night Rachel has her first "date" with Joshua, she convinces Ross to go with Emily instead. Emily is an English girl from Shropshire living in London. She and Ross end up in a bed & breakfast in Vermont at the end of the date, and the rest of their relationship is similarly fast-paced. When Emily leaves to go back to England, Ross catches her at the airport and tell her that he loves her, to which she responds "thank you." Later she reveals that she is seeing another man named Colin. She decides to end it with him and admits to Ross that she loves him too.

Greatly bothered by the fact that Emily has to keep traveling back and forth between New York and London, Ross suggests they get married (despite only dating for 6 weeks), Emily, at first she is reluctant, but agrees to, and Ross gives a proper proposal. Their wedding is set for the last episode of Season 4, only ten episodes from their first date. Rachel is very unhappy as she realizes she is still in love with Ross, and decides to tell him at the wedding in London. Deciding at the last minute not to tell Ross about her feelings, Rachel simply hugs Ross. However, seeing Rachel brings back Ross' old feelings, and instead of saying "I, Ross, take thee, Emily," Ross accidentally says "I, Ross, take thee, Rachel". The quote is left as a cliff-hanger to end Season 4.

The wedding continues in Season 5 and is finalized. However, feeling humiliated, Emily escapes the wedding party. Trying to save the situation, Ross asks Emily's parents to tell her he would wait for her at the airport, hoping she would still like to go for the honeymoon. After apparently getting stood up by Emily, Ross eventually decides to take Rachel with him instead - only to be seen leaving together by a late-arriving Emily. Emily escapes Ross again and runs into hiding afterwards.

Ross then returns to the States, attempting to reach Emily and persuade her to forgive him over the phone. When she finally calls him, he convinces her to come to New York. She agrees, with the condition that Ross will never see Rachel again. She also convinces him to sell all of his furniture that came into any contact with Rachel and move into one of her relatives' apartments. The other five friends agree to support Ross as long as he is happy with being manipulated by Emily, but when Ross expresses his discontent with all the changes he has to make, the group helps him realize that he cannot meet all of Emily's conditions. Ross then tells Emily that he doesn't agree to her terms, and their marriage ends. Later on Emily calls and leaves a message that she wants to talk to Ross about getting back together even though she is getting married. Ross decides not to call her back.

In reality, actress Helen Baxendale became pregnant between seasons 4 and 5; as a result she was unable to travel to the US to do any filming for season 5. As a result her only appearances were heavily swaddled in bed clothes, and she had to be written out of the series a lot earlier than was intended.

In one episode, Ross dates Janice after learning that Emily will be remarried. Janice is still under the impression that Chandler is in Yemen at the time. Ross claims that they both have a lot of things in common, such as being divorced and having kids. This relationship does not last beyond one episode because Janice can't take Ross' whining about his post-Emily situation.

When Phoebe and Joey agree to set each other up with a friend in Season 9, Joey forgets to find a date for Phoebe and lies to her, telling her he found a friend named Mike. He then shouts the name Mike in the coffee house, and when Michael "Mike" Hannigan responds, Joey convinces him to play the part of his old friend on their double date. Phoebe soon discovers Joey's trick and leaves, but Mike finds her the next day and asks her out. They date for quite a while and decide to move in together. However, while Mike is moving in, he tells Phoebe that he never wants to be married again because of what he went through in his last divorce. Phoebe decides that she shouldn't be in a relationship with no future and breaks up with Mike, but finds it impossible to get over him. When in the last episode of the season, Phoebe's long-lost boyfriend David arrives in New York and is convinced by Chandler (although Chandler didn't mean to give David advice) to propose to her to make her forget about Mike, Monica warns Mike. He then flies into Barbados and proposes to Phoebe before David can. Phoebe turns down his proposal, saying all she needed was to know there was a future, but starts dating Mike again. Eventually Mike proposes again, not without humorous complications, and gets married to Phoebe towards the end of Season 10. In the final episode of the series, he states that he is ready to have children with Phoebe.

Janice Litman Goralnik (née Hosenstein) is portrayed as an extremely annoying character with a loud nasally New-York accent, very loud laughter, and an extravagant fashion sense with her trademark expression "OH MY GOD!"(Causing some to speculate that she is a parody of Fran Drescher). Though she is Chandler's girlfriend from the start of the show, she isn't seen until the fifth episode, when Chandler enlists Phoebe to help him break up with her. Later that season, Chandler invites her to a New Year's party in a desperate attempt to have someone to kiss, but once again decides that she is too annoying and finishes with her before midnight. After a few episodes, Chandler and Janice hook up again after she turns out to be his blind date set up unknowingly by Joey. He breaks up with her again the next day (after they sleep together) which happens to be Valentine's Day.

In the beginning of Season 2 Chandler, convinced that he will never find love again, calls Janice, who turns out to be married and pregnant. In the last episode of Season 2, Chandler befriends a mystery woman over the Internet, and when she turns out to be Janice, decides to get back together with her. This time, the relationship lasts well into Season 3 and ends when Chandler discovers that Janice still has feelings for her ex-husband. He tells her to get back together with him for the sake of their child. In the middle of Season 4, Janice and Chandler meet once again. When telling the group why he must end the relationship, he says "You know all those little annoying habits she had when we fell in love? They're all back, and she's picked up like nine new ones!" He decides to end their relationship before it starts with a "pre-emptive strike", but cannot, instead telling Janice he is being transferred to Yemen. When Janice follows him to the airport, Chandler is forced to buy a ticket and actually fly to Yemen.

In the middle of Season 5, Janice makes an appearance when she dates Ross. She is still under the impression that Chandler is in Yemen. The relationship ends when Janice finds Ross too whiny and annoying.

She appears in Season 6 as a voice-over on a mixed tape she made for Chandler during their relationship. In Season 7, when Monica is engaged to Chandler, Janice unintentionally invites herself to their wedding. Monica claims Chandler still has feelings for Janice and that his marriage with Monica may be jeopardized by Janice's presence at the wedding; but the story is just a way to get rid of her. Janice says she understands, and for Chandler to call her when his marriage to Monica "goes in the pooper". A similar excuse is used again by Chandler in Season 10 to prevent Janice from buying the house next door to the one he and Monica are buying.

Janice also makes a less significant appearance at the end of Season 8, in which she reveals she is married to a nearly deaf man named Sid upon going into labor on the same day, and sharing a labor room with Rachel. After her baby, Aaron (who is hinted to be very unattractive), is born, Janice predicts that he will marry Emma. She also briefly appears in Season 9, where she and Sid are undertaking fertility tests in the same clinic as Monica and Chandler, joking that the doctors gave Chandler "the kiddie size" cup. Janice makes an appearance in every single season of the series, with 3 appearances in the first season, 2 in the second season, 6 in the third season (this was when Chandler was willingly in a relationship with her), and 1 appearance every season thereafter. However, in the sixth season, only her voice can be heard, and she appears in a flashback scene in the clip show episode of that season.

She is also considered one of the most popular and humorous recurring characters in the entire series.

Carol Willick is a sixth grade teacher and Ross' ex-wife, played at first by Anita Barone (in one episode) and then by Jane Sibbett. She left Ross shortly before the first episode of the show, when she realized she was a lesbian. In the years prior to the show, Carol and Ross regularly hung out together with the rest of the gang: in one episode Phoebe admits to missing Carol's presence at their get-togethers.

Early in the show, she reveals that she is pregnant with Ross' child (in this episode she is played by Anita Barone); near the end of the first season, she gives birth to baby Ben. In Season 2, she marries her life partner Susan Bunch.

Carol makes occasional appearances, usually together with Susan and Ben, throughout the course of the series. Her final appearance was in Season 7, when she was visited by Rachel.

Although for the most part it appears Ross is over Carol, a few episodes imply that Ross does have some lingering feelings for her: they even share a last kiss in The One With the Candy Hearts. Ross and Carol are on good terms after their divorce, but Ross and Susan are not, as Ross resents Susan for "stealing" Carol away from him, though later they seem to be on good terms.

Played by Tom Selleck, Richard Burke, M.D. is a handsome ophthalmologist who is 21 years older than Monica and close friends with her parents. They fall in love when she caters a party for him in the middle of Season 2 and have a very close and deep relationship until the last episode of the season, when Monica discovers that Richard isn't willing to have any more kids. Because she is sure she wants children, Monica decides she cannot continue the relationship and they break up. Monica describes getting over Richard as the "hardest thing [she] ever had to do", and when they get back together in Season 3, they decide to promptly end their new relationship before it goes any further than sex. Dr. Burke makes a final appearance in the last episode of Season 6, interfering with Chandler's plans to propose to Monica, stating that he is finally willing to get married and have children. He backs down after realizing that Chandler is prepared to offer her the same thing, and that they are happy together. Though he is unseen throughout the remainder of the series, he is still mentioned often, much to Chandler's chagrin (one prominent example featured Joey and Chandler discovering a tape with Monica's name on it in Richard's apartment, but it was quickly revealed that Richard had taped over the 'Monica' segment). Monica also had a brief spell with Richard's son, Timothy, who was also an eye doctor, but that quickly fell apart after she kissed him and it reminded her of Richard.

Mr. Zelner

Mr. Zelner, introduced in season 5, is Rachel's boss at Ralph Lauren. Rachel inadvertently kisses him during her job interview but still gets hired. He also has a son, Ross, who is interested in dinosaurs, which Ross (Geller) uses as an avenue to convince him to offer Rachel her job back when she's fired after being caught interviewing for a job with Gucci. He also thinks that Ross's (Geller) name is "Ron."

Kim

Kim, introduced in season 5, is another of Rachel's bosses at Ralph Lauren. Upset that she doesn't get a say in any decisions made on the smoking break, Rachel pretends that she smokes to air her opinions to her boss. She encourages her boss and other colleague to quit smoking, but catches them smoking anyway. Rachel's boss believes that Rachel has really tried her hardest to give up, so threatens that she will lose her job if she catches her smoking again. Appearing once again in season 6, she appears to begin liking Rachel after she gossips about Phoebe's alleged kiss with Ralph Lauren. Kim mistakenly believes it was in fact Rachel who kissed him, trying to get Kim's job. She changes her mind when she sees Ralph give Rachel 'the coldest look she's ever seen'.

Barry Farber

Barry Farber was engaged to Rachel Green, before she left him at the alter. Barry later married Mindy Farber who happens to be her best friend but divorced in season 6 after he cheated on her with another woman. He is an orthodontist. Although in "The Pilot" it as said that his last name was Finkle. But then in the next few episodes he is referred to as Barry Farber.

Mark Robinson

Mark Robinson was introduced in Season 3 as a customer at the 50s diner "Moondance" where Monica was employed. Overhearing a whining conversation between Rachel and Monica he offers to help Rachel get a job alongside him at Bloomingdales (Rachel was employed at Fortunata Fashions after quitting her job at Central Perk to pursue her fashion career). Ross was jealous of Mark's relationship with Rachel and resentful of him. After Ross and Rachel ended their relationship, it is revealed that Mark has always had a crush and Rachel and the two went on a date, however Rachel refused to continue a romantic relationship with him due to her mourning the end of her relationship with Ross. Since Rachel felt that being with Mark would be to get back at Ross, Mark decides to "get back at Ross with himself." While Mark only appeared in season 3, he returned in season 10 catching Rachel and Ross carrying Rachel's possessions out from Ralph Lauren (she was fired for going on an interview with Gucci). Ross doesn't remember him at first, until Rachel reminds him, in which he declares, "Mark, Mark!? I hate that guy!" but Rachel learns he is married with kids, leading Ross to not care anymore. Mark did however find Rachel a job with Louis Vuitton leading to almost moving to Paris, Ross tries to bribe Mr. Zelner into re-employing her, finally allowing her to go after realizing how nervous and scared, yet incredibly excited she was. Rachel doesn't end up going, deciding to stay with Ross at the last minute. She gets off the plane and shows up at Ross' apartment and in the final scenes is seen hugging Ross and finally, once again in his arms, leaving behind the job Mark acquired for her (symbolizing Mark was never for her).

Pete Becker

Pete Becker was another customer of the Moondance Cafe during Monica's employment there, who overheard Monica's distressed conversations with Rachel over her own lack of a boyfriend and used the subject to ask her out himself. Monica was initially reluctant to his offers but after discovering that the $20,000 check he left her as a joke tip was actually real and that Pete was a billionare software engineer (he created the universally popular program "MOS 865", a reference to real-life program "MS-DOS"), she confronted him about trying to buy her affection but was charmed into finally accepting his offer for a date, the event of which ended up being a flight to Italy for real Italian pizza. Pete continued to try and woo her with his money and charm, including buying a restaurant and hiring her as the head chef, but she still just wasn't attracted to him physically, until he surprised her with the perfect kiss. They dated very happily for several weeks until Pete hinted at a surprise that Monica and the gang thought would be a marriage proposal, which Monica seriously considered accepting. Unexpectedly, the surprise turned out to be Pete entering himself into the Ultimate Fighting Championship tournament with the plan to continue fighting until he was crowned champion. Having already "conquered the business world, the intellectual world" and now having "the most beautiful woman in the world", it was Pete's goal to "conquer the physical world" as well. Pete, however, was not initially a skilled enough fighter to defeat the other UFC opponents and was repeatedly injured. Monica begged him to quit, but Pete insisted that this was who he was, and that asking him to quit would be asking him to be someone he's not. Unable to bear seeing him get beaten up in the ring repeatedly, Monica left Pete, saying she would have to leave if he insisted on continuing. What happened to him after this episode was never revealed.

David, the "Scientist Guy"

First featured in The One With the Monkey, Phoebe yells at him when his loud conversation with fellow scientist Max interrupts her guitar playing. When David explains that they were talking about how beautiful she was, all is forgiven and she now wants to break the New Year's "no date" pact. Unfortunately, David is torn because he and Max were given a grant to study in Minsk. David mistakenly claims Minsk is in Russia, while it really is in Belarus. Eventually, he leaves, and she is left heartbroken. He returns in Season 7's The One With All the Cheesecakes to visit, and Phoebe has to decide between seeing him during the one night he'll be there, or keeping her dinner with Joey. She does the former, despite lecturing Joey for doing the same thing, but Joey forgives her, remembering how sad she was the first time he left. He then returns during the latter half of season 9 after failing in his research in Minsk. He professes his love for Phoebe, but she has moved on to Mike by this time, and she eventually accepts Mike's proposal for marriage.

Soon however, he finds out that she likes him, and they begin an affair. They break up on Rachel's 30th birthday because she believed him to be too young to want the things that she wanted. He makes a reappearance on the eighth season of the show when Rachel's baby's father's identity was not yet disclosed (he was wearing a red sweater, the sweater the father left in Rachel and Joey's apartment.) He wanted to get back together but was afraid when he'd heard that she was pregnant.
