Bhagwati Charan Verma

Bhagwati Charan Verma (भगवती चरण वर्मा) (August 30 1903 -October 5 1981), was one of the leading writers in Hindi. He wrote many novels, but his magnum opus was 'Chitralekha' (चित्रलेखा), which was made into two successful Hindi films, 1941 and 1964.

Biography

Bhagwati Charan Verma was born on August 30 1903, at Safipur in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh [ [http://unnao.nic.in/person.htm Bhagwati Charan Verma] Unnao district Official website.] [http://www.abhivyakti-hindi.org/lekhak/b/bcverma.htm Biography & Works] www.abhivyakti-hindi.org.] , where he received his early education, thereafter he studied in Thesophical School [ [http://www.famousauthorshub.com/asian-authors/bhagwati-charan-verma/ Bhagwati Charan Verma] www.famousauthorshub.com.] , and went on to do his B.A. L.L.B. from Allahabad University . He work at Calcutta Film Corporation for a while, followed by editing a weekly magazine, titled 'Vichaar'. He also did screenwriting in Bombay, and later edited a Hindi daily 'Navjeevan'; and finally he started writing independently in 1957.

He remained the Hindi Advisor at All India Radio, Lucknow for a while, and later in 1978, he was nominated to the Upper House of Indian Parliament, Rajya Sabha [ [http://www.india9.com/i9show/Bhagwati-Charan-Verma-25261.htm Biography] www.india9.com.] , and died on October 5, 1981.
