Japanese destroyer Sazanami

"Sazanami" was a "Fubuki"-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Her name means "Curling Waves (Ripples)", or "Pretty, Small Waves Raised by a Zephyr".

On 12 January 1944, "Sazanami" departed Rabaul to join a tanker convoy en route from Palau to Truk. She was torpedoed and sunk by USS "Albacore" (SS-218) 300 miles (550 km) southeast of Yap (coord|05|15|N|141|15|E |scale:10000000 |display=title,inline). Of her crew, 153 died; 89 survivors, including Lieutenant Commander Hashimoto, were rescued by destroyer "Akebono".
