He auditioned for the role of Kotaro Minami in 1986.He managed to impress the panel of judges including Ishinomori sensei, and won the roleout of 8000 contestants.

Kurata has apparently been out of much public spotlight after leaving the entertainment industry for a bit of time, but came back to voice Kotaro Minami/Kamen Rider Black in Kamen Rider: Seigi No Keifu, as well as appearing in Battle of the Cooking Iron. In 2006, he had been in an interview made by TOEI regarding about his time in the '80s and his thoughts about the Kamen Rider Black series.

Kurata is a beef meat lover. He now owns a beefsteak restaurant in Kōtō,Tokyo and acts from time to time in tv dramas and stage plays.
