Robert Ghillies (November 26 1950 - Present), born Robert Gillies, is a Scottish composer who has written works for symphony orchestra, a variety of chamber ensembles, piano, organ, harp, voice, film, theatre and modern ballet, with performances in Britain, Europe and America.

Editor's Note: Many of his works dating from the period of 1994-2000 are under the name Robert Sparey Ghillies to avoid confusion with the many other individuals with the surname Gillies who are also involved in music and the arts in general.

Biography

Early Years (1950-72)

Born in 1950, he was the eldest of a family of seven. His father (Dr. Robert Reid Gillies), a doctor and fine amateur organist, and his mother (Agnes Mitchell), an amateur violinist and actress, ensured that music was always available. His childhood was spent roaming the countryside of the Lothians of Scotland and experimenting in things electrical and mechanical. He built his first 'radio set' aged ten, followed shortly by a 'spark transmitter'. Needless to say, interference to local radio and television reception was not appreciated, and his transmitter was promptly closed down by the authorities - namely his father and the local police sergeant! Various musical instruments were played with simply because they were at hand. They ranged from the harmonium to the harmonica, however, a few months short of his 17th birthday, he announced to his father that although medicine and electronics were of interest, he wished to become a 'cellist. An ever-dutiful father went in search of an instrument and teacher.Arriving at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama some eighteen months later, panic set in as it became self evident that he was rather inexperienced, however, after four years guidance by the 'cellists Audrey Hughes and Joan Dickson, he completed his studies and left the Academy in 1972, basing himself in Glasgow as a freelance 'cellist.

The Years of Development (1972-92)

The following years were spent working, not only in the classical field, mainly as a chamber musician, soloist and teacher, but also gaining a working knowledge in traditional Scottish music and jazz. This led to experiments in his style and technique as a 'cellist as well as becoming a fluid guitarist and electric bassist. He has played with many well-known chamber ensembles, including, as a founding member, the Bernadel String Quartet, and later with the Friedrich Piano Trio; he was also invited by Leonard Friedman to play with the Scottish Baroque Ensemble on its formation. As a soloist he has performed many works from the standard repertoire including the Beethoven Triple Concerto and the first performance of the Kabalevsky 'Cello Concerto in Scotland; he also gave the premier performance of William Sweeney's, "Ceol Beg" for 'cello and orchestra. In 1991 he returned from a teaching post in England to his native Scotland, and, a year later, after years of spiritual uncertainty, found a tremendous change in his life after embracing the Bahá'í Faith. Changes in his emotional life soon followed after his decision to create as a composer rather than to re-create as a player and teacher.

The Years of Discovery (1992-2006)

In early 1996, a BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra club concert, held in Studio 1, Glasgow, devoted an entire programme to his music. In the same year he had one of his string quartets premiered at the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival which led him to accepting an invitation to take up the position of "composer in residence", a position that he enjoyed for several years. During his residency he had several commissions premiered. A few weeks later came his first commission of several, for a film score. He was approached by Mateus Basso to write a score for the film "Careless". As the score was growing and excerpts were recorded to allow the production team to comment, they were so impressed with the music that they decided to cut all the dialogue and to produce a "silent movie" to allow the music more prominence. The film was premiered at the Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh in April of 1997, and, went on to take "1st Choice" in the BBC 2000 Talent Competition. The film was screened on BBC Television in October of 1997.

In March 1996, a crazed gunman Thomas Hamilton, killed several children and their teacher at Dunblane primary school in Scotland. Much earlier in his career, Ghillies had had a few 'cello pupils that attended this school, and, because of his association with the school, he was commissioned by Stirling Orchestral Society to write a work in memory of those who where massacred. Thus in December 1997, in the Holy Rude Kirk, Stirling, "For Children" (a work for solo viola and orchestra) was premiered by the violist Carolyn Sparey, with the Stirling Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Tim Redman.

1997 also saw a return to his teenage love affair with photography, when he was reunited with the camera that he had been given for his tenth birthday. It was a medium format bellows camera of German origin, and, remarkably the shutter still fired perfectly after nearly thirty years abandoned in storage! Having been given this camera as a birthday present, he was next introduced to a colleague of his fathers at Edinburgh University; Tom C. Dodds, the chief medical photographer. Over the next few years, many Saturdays were spent together as Dodds guided the young Ghillies through the "art and science", of capturing "moments in time". Now some thirty years later, and having modernised his photographic equipment, he spent some months travelling throughout Britain gathering images for an exhibition he entitled, "Lights of Guidance". This exhibition of duo-tone prints was compiled with the intention of questioning the viewer as to, "what guides them in life; is it the materialistic, the celestial or the spiritual?" Having had a successful two months showing in Glasgow and Edinburgh, during April and May of 1998, the exhibition went on tour from as far north as Orkney, until its final showing in London some sixteen months later. The success of the exhibition paved the way for openings as a photographic tutor, as well as work covering portraiture and the technically demanding skills of architectural photography.

In comparison to the performance of "For Children", a somewhat happier premier followed in 1998 at the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival, with a performance of "Vox Humana". This Choral Symphony in nine movements (inspired by 'The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah'), was written for solo violin, solo double bass, guitar, string quartet and string orchestra, and, among the performers were, Angus Ramsay (violin), John Clark (double bass) and Philip Thorne (guitar). The 1999 commission for the festival, "Firdaws Garden" (Paradise Garden), for solo violin, piano and strings, was premiered by the soloists Jennifer Christie and Scott Mitchell, in the presence of H.R.H the Duke of Edinburgh who was a guest at the festival. Apart as his duties as visiting "composer in residence", Ghillies also tutored a class of photographic students from the Glasgow School of Art who were attending the festival, and, he was commissioned to work as sole "royal photographer" for the duration of the Dukes visit to Mull and Iona.

In early Summer of 2000, Ghillies relocated to the Isle of Mull (off the west coast of Scotland), where he has found a new vitality in his creative capabilities, amid the colourful landscapes which he refers to as, "My Firdaws Garden".

Catalogue of Works

Normally the works written by a certain composer are followed by the word Opus and a number signalling the work's creation either by date, collection, etc. When Ghillies met the Baha'i Faith, he destroyed his previous compositions because he felt that they were written in what he describes as a 'past-life' or the period in his life before his personal spiritual awakening. Ghillies therefore chose to replace Opus with the initials 'B.E.' ('B' standing for Baha'i and 'E' standing for Era) as, in the Baha'i Faith, their calendar differs from the typical Gregorian calendar, with B.E. 0 replacing 1844 A.D., the year in which Baha'is believe a new religious dispensation was begun.
