Bishop Castle

Bishop Castle

Bishop Castle is a one-man construction project situated in the Rocky Mountains of Southern Colorado near Fairview in Custer County. The castle is named after its constructor Jim Bishop.

History

At the age of 15, Jim Bishop assumed ownership (under the little-known law of laches) of a convert|2.5|acre|m2|sing=on plot of land outside of Pueblo, Colorado.Ever since then, he has been battling local and state government over ownership. Because the land was heavily forested, Jim and his friends often used it for camping.

Construction on the castle did not begin until 1971, when Bishop began construction on a large cistern, which he decided to surround with rocks. Several neighbors noted that the impressive structure looked something like a castle. Bishop took this to heart and soon began building his fortress.

Construction on the castle continues today with the addition of a ballroom, a dragon shaped furnace, a chapel, and several complete fireplaces.

Tourism

The castle is open from dawn until dusk 7 days a week, year round. Entrance is free, though donations are suggested. Several hand-painted signs warn visitors to climb at their own risk.

The castle is along a paved public road, along the Frontier Pathways Scenic and Historic Byway.

Motorcyclists

Bishop Castle is a popular destination for motorcycle riders all around Colorado. While the castle itself is the destination, the roads leading to the castle are renowned for their twists and turns that appeal to sport motorcycle riders. Riders should be advised that rain is common around Bishop's Castle and cold weather should be expected, even during summer.

Location

The Castle is located in south central Colorado on State Highway 165 approximately convert|13|mi|km southeast of the junction of SH 96 and SH 165.
