Venta Icenorum

Venta Icenorum, located at modern-day Caistor St Edmund in the English county of Norfolk, was the civitas [Ptolemy, "Geography" [http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Gazetteer/Periods/Roman/_Texts/Ptolemy/2/2*.html 2.2] ] capital of the powerful and independent Iceni tribe, who inhabited the flatlands and marshes of that county and earned immortality for their revolt against Roman rule under their queen Boudica (or Boadicea) in the winter of 61 CE. The Iceni had close ties with their neighbouring tribe the Trinovantes to the south and possibly also with the civilised Corieltauvi to the north-west, and their former adversaries the Catuvellauni lay to the south-west.

Venta Icenorum is mentioned in the "Ravenna Cosmography", [ [http://www.roman-britain.org/geography/ravenna.htm "Ravenna Cosmography" (British section)] ] and the "Antonine Itinerary", [ [http://www.roman-britain.org/geography/itinerary.htm "Antonine Itinerary" (British section)] ] was a settlement near the village of Caistor St. Edmund, some convert|5|mi|km south of present-day Norwich, and a mile or two from the Bronze Age Henge at Arminghall. It lies on the River Tas.
