Faculty of Arts and Architecture (University of Brighton)

The Faculty of Arts & Architecture in the University of Brighton enjoys a long-established reputation as an international centre of excellence in the creative arts, architecture, design and humanities. All subject areas offer a range of full and part-time programmes of study from undergraduate through to postgraduate MPhil and PhD. Located in the centre of Brighton the Faculty provides a unique environment in which to study. The Faculty’s Centre for Research and Development (CRD) supports research of international significance and resulted in the award of a grade 5 in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2001). It is also home to significant Archives and hosts the [http://www.brighton.ac.uk/adm-hea/index.html Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Art Design & Media] (ADM HEA) and was also recognised as a [http://www.brighton.ac.uk/arts/cetld/index.html Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design] in 2005, (CETLD). This Centre is created through a unique, world-class collaboration that brings together the knowledge and expertise of the University of Brighton's The Faculty of Arts & Architecture; The Royal Institute of British Architects; the Royal College of Art and The Victoria & Albert Museum. This partnership was made possible through the initial award of £3.5 million from HEFCE. The Centre will develop more responsive and personalised learning opportunities for students in Higher Education and enhance the scholarship of teaching and learning for staff working in creative design and associated disciplines.

History of Brighton School of Art

The Brighton School of Art was established above the kitchen of the Royal Pavilion in January 1859, moving to its own building in Grand Parade in 1877. Achieving national standing and expanding substantially in subsequent decades, the school moved into larger modern premises on the same site in 1961. In 1970 Brighton Polytechnic was formed from the Brighton Colleges of Art & Technology. In 1992 along with many other former Polytechnics, Brighton was formally designated as a 'new' university - the University of Brighton.
