Grulla National Wildlife Refuge

Grulla National Wildlife Refuge is located in Eastern New Mexico in Roosevelt County, New Mexico southwest of the intersection of State Highway 88 and the Texas - New Mexico border about 25 miles southeast of Portales, New Mexico east of the tiny community of Arch. It was once part of the DZ Ranch.
The refuge primarily consists of an intermittent salt lake known locally as the "DZ Lake" that provides habitat to Sandhill Crane and other birds when it contains water. Other birds sometimes seen are Ring-necked Pheasant, Lesser Prairie Chicken, and Scaled Quail.
The refuge has no facilities other than a parking lot and trails and is administered by Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge in Texas.
The word "Grulla" is Spanish for crane.
