B-cell receptor

B-cell receptor

B-cell receptors are proteins found on the surface of B cells.cite journal |author=Barral P, Eckl-Dorna J, Harwood NE, "et al" |title=B cell receptor-mediated uptake of CD1d-restricted antigen augments antibody responses by recruiting invariant NKT cell help in vivo |journal=Proc. An association with systemic lupus erythematosus has been suggested.cite journal |author=Jenks SA, Sanz I |title=Altered B cell receptor signaling in human systemic lupus erythematosus |journal=Autoimmun Rev |volume= |issue= |pages= |year=2008 |month=August |pmid=18723129 |doi=10.1016/j.autrev.2008.07.047 |url=http://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1568-9972(08)00160-2]

There are several different types of B-cell receptors, but an individual B-cell can only produce one. B-cell receptors bind antigens, triggering growth and proliferation of B-cells and production of antigen-specific immunoglobulin. This also results in the production of memory cells, which will proliferate if the body is ever exposed to the antigen again.

A B-cell receptor is better known as an antibody.
