Hunters Association

Hunters Association

The Hunters Association is a fictional global organization appearing in the Japanese manga and series series Hunter × Hunter. The Hunters Association is responsible for the testing and licensing of "Hunters," a person that has proven themselves through rigorous examination to be an elite member of humanity. With the passing of the examination, a Hunter is rewarded with a license to go almost anywhere in the world or do almost anything. Typically, Hunters devote themselves to tracking down priceless items, mystical places, and the unseen wonders of the world.

The Hunter Exam

The Hunter Exam is held only once per year. Registration for each annual exam concludes on December 31st, [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 15 |year=2007|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 146|pages=Pg.107|isbn=978-1-4215-1071-2] , with the exam occurring soon after. Due to the huge numbers of people that register for the exam, the Hunters Association hires agents to cut down on the number of registrants that make it to the exam site by weeding out those that show little promise, for example, by guiding a ship carrying registrants through a storm, or by redirecting and ambushing buses carrying registrants. Those that manage to pass by these agents are then challenged to find the exam site itself, as prospective examinees are only given the date, time, and general location of that year's exam. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 1|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 003|pages=Pg.63|isbn=978-1-59116-753-2] Those that manage to find the exam site in time are given number tags in the order of their arrival.

The Hunter Exam itself is conducted by licensed Hunters, chosen by the ruling Committee of the Hunters Association, that take on the duty for free. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 1|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 008|pages=Pg.173|isbn=978-1-59116-753-2] The exam actually consists of five or six separate exams, determined ahead of time by the chosen examiners and the Hunters Committee. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 2|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 013|pages=Pg.90|isbn=ISBN 978-1-59116-785-3] The exams differ from year to year, though there are usually elements of combat involved. The exams are also frequently deadly, such that fatalities and casualties among the examinees are both common and expected. Finally, there is no guarantee that any examinee will pass the Hunter Exam; years in which no examinees pass are common.

The Hunter License

Benefits
Being licensed as an official Hunter bestows a number of desirable benefits on the licensee. Because of this, huge numbers of people register for the licensing exam, which is held only once per year, even though fatalities among the exam takers are common, and even expected. The first and foremost is the recognition a license holder can enjoy, being one of the few in the world who owns a license. Hunters are commonly seen at the head of whatever field they pursue, and experienced Hunters are virtually guaranteed lucrative offers of employment from people or organizations seeking the most capable agents possible.

There are also many material benefits to being a licensed Hunter, which include: [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 1|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 005|pages=Pg.112|isbn=978-1-59116-753-2]
* 1. 95% of all public facilities can be used at no cost. Furthermore, all such services are provided at first class.cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 037|pages=Pg.42|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0]
* 2. Unrivaled freedom to travel around the world. Access is granted to about 90% of countries which normally restrict the entry of outsiders, and access to 75% of areas that the general public is prohibited from entering.
* 3. Almost no legal responsibility for murder. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 4|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 032|pages=Pg.119|isbn=978-1-59116-992-5]
* 4. The ability to sell the Hunter License as a valuable collector's item. Though only the original owner of a Hunter License can take advantage of the normal benefits, it can be still sold for enough money to support them self for at least 7 generations in luxury.
* 5. The ability to use the license as collateral for a zero-interest loan of 100 million jenny (approximately 90 million yen) at any bank. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 10|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 085|pages=Pg.27|isbn=978-1-4215-0645-6]
* 6. Access to the secret Hunters Only Website, where secret intelligence about various subjects, uploaded by other Hunters, can be purchased. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 8|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 070|pages=Pg.116|isbn=978-1-4215-0643-2]

Appearance
A Hunter license looks similar to a credit card, but slightly thicker and with an inbuilt computer chip. The front shows the licensee's Hunter rank, while the back has a magnetic strip with a unique serial number that identifies each individual to their license. The card can's magnetic strip also allows it to to be swiped through machines to verify its authenticity and to access special services.

Ranks
Upon passing the Hunter Exam, candidates will receive a standard Hunter License. However, Hunters can be awarded with stars for significant contributions to society.
* 1 Star - Given to hunters who have made a significant contribution to a part of society.
* 2 Star - Given to hunters who have made significant contributions to several fields.
* 3 Star - Given to hunters who have made extraordinary contributions to society over several fields. This is the rarest and most difficult rank to obtain, and is considered a great honor. The number of 3-Star hunters is about 10.

Types of Hunters

Official Hunters, ones who have passed the Hunter Examination, usually choose to align their careers as Hunters along specialized paths. The following list comprises the different types of Hunters that have appeared in the manga.

*Blacklist Hunters - Blacklist Hunters dedicate their skills to tracking down dangerous and wanted criminals. Aspiring Blacklist Hunters often have intentions of justice or revenge, although many do it simply for the wealth gained from the profession.
* Treasure Hunters- Treasure Hunters scour the world in search of rare and valuable items. Hunters who take this path tend to be the most adventurous, or the most greedy.
* Gourmet Hunters - The goal of a Gourmet Hunter is to find and collect rare ingredients, then bring their flavors to life by using new and creative styles of cooking. The second test of the Hunter exam, illustrated the creed of the Gourmet Hunter. Though never stated explicitly, most Gourmet Hunters probably use specialized Nen abilities in their field.
* Archaeological Hunters - Archeological Hunters are dedicated to uncovering ruins and reviving ancient societies. Ging Freecss is the most famous Archaeological Hunter--he has made unparalleled contributions to this area of study.
* Beast Hunters - Beast Hunters are Hunters that feel a deep love for nature; their job involves the study and preservation of undiscovered animal species. Kite, Knuckle, and Shoot are all Beast Hunters.
* Music Hunters - Catered toward the musically talented, Music Hunters are ones in pursuit of rare musical pieces. Melody is a Hunter of this category.
* Contract Hunters - They find rich people and make deals/contracts with them.
* Temp Hunters - Hunters with government jobs subcontracted to them from the Hunters Association. Depending on the difficulty of the job and risks involved, Temp Hunters are guaranteed a certain sum for whatever job taken. As such, many Hunters choose to make this their career and subsequently ridiculed by professional Hunters for doing so. Examiners

Examiners for the 287th [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 038|pages=Pg.59|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] annual Hunter Exam, the year the series' main characters took the exam.

Captain

Not part of the official exam, the unnamed captain commands the ship that brings Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika to the mainland where the Hunter Exam was taking place. He was also the first paid agent of the Hunters Association the three would run into while traveling to the exam site. When Gon was able to accurately predict the coming of a large storm, despite never having been at sea before, the captain realized he was the son of Ging Freecss, who had also traveled on the captain's ship many years before.

Kiriko

A beast that can change its physical appearance. A family of Kiriko uses their shapeshifting abilities to pretend to be a human family under attack by Kiriko in their natural form, in order to test Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio. They pass, and the Kiriko reveal their true purpose - navigators who guide worthy Hunter Exam registrants to the exam site. In the following year, they also guide Killua to the exam site upon learning of his friendship with Gon.

Satotz (サトツ "Satotsu") is a seemingly mouthless man, the appointed examiner for the first part of the Hunter Exam. He tests the examinees' stamina by leading them on a marathon of initially unknown length through an underground tunnel. Though he seems only to move his legs at a fast walking pace, the examinees are forced to run faster and faster to keep up with his speed. After they emerge from the tunnel, Satotz then leads the examinees through the Milsy Wetlands, nicknamed the "Swindler's Swamp", a swamp filled with deadly man-eating animals, before leaving them at the site of the second exam.

As a Hunter archaeologist in his normal profession, he was also inspired by Ging in taking up the Hunter license. He initially simply felt a strong civic duty to carry out his role as a judge, he progressively takes a liking to Gon and wishes to help him.

One of the second stage examiners during the Hunter exam, along with Menchi. Buhara is an Gourmet Hunter, and is a hulking figure with a large potbelly and an even larger appetite. Buhara's easy-going nature contrasts with Menchi's highly selective one. Buhara was the judge in the first round of stage 2. His condition for passing the round was for the candidates to hunt down any wild pig in the nearby forest, and bring it back to him roasted and ready to eat. The only type of wild pig in the forest turned out to be the great stamp, a giant horned boar twice as tall as a human. Even so, more than half of the candidates that made it to the second exam passed.

One of the two examiners for the second stage of the Hunter exam, along with Buhara. Menchi is picky when it comes to food, but it fits her profession very well as she is one of the world's best Gourmet Hunters. Coupled with Menchi's sensitive and highly selective sense of taste and culinary skills is a physically fit body that enables her to carry out the search of unique foods and culinary experiences, many times in dangerous places. She obtained her Single Star Hunter License at the age of 21.

Menchi was one of the two judges that presided over the second stage of the Exam. Her exam topic was to prepare a piece of sushi for her to taste. If it met up to her stringent expectations, the candidate would pass. However, the test did not quite go as planned, as everyone but Hanzo was baffled as to what sushi actually was. He accidentally spills the information to the rest of the group, though this does not do much good. Each character proceeded to deliver their idea of "sushi" to Menchi, only to have it rejected. Thus, none of the candidates passed at first. However, Netero later comes and convinces her to give the candidates another chance since the challenge was rather unfair ( mostly due to her stubborn nature, Menchi didn't even taste most of the samples given to her due to their shapes). Thus her test was changed to simply boiling an egg, after retrieving it from the web of a spider eagle, which hung from the walls of a mile deep canyon.

Lippo (リッポー "Rippō") is the examiner of the third stage, the Trick Tower, and a prison warden. He concocts up many devious ideas, such as the hurricane storm and the number tag stages, that test the candidates in different aspects of group dynamics, both in a communal and individual front. Many candidates are forced to work together to have any chance of passing Lippo's tests.

He is a Black-List Hunter with a repertoire with includes the capture of "Master of Autopsies, Jonas", a murderer he uses in the tower. Jonas had more than a hundred kills, all of them torn to dozens of pieces with his bare hands. In order to coerce prisoners to fight Hunter Exam candidates in the Trick Tower, he offers to shorten the sentence of any inmate by one year for every hour they stall the examinees.

Bendot

A prisoner used by Lippo in Trick Tower to test the examinees. He faces Gon, Killua, Leorio, Kurapika, and Tonpa. Nothing is known about Bendot. He seems to be just a normal muscled fighter. He fights the first round against Tompa, who gives up immediately after the start signal as a way to sabotage his fellows, although Killua thinks that if Tonpa hadn't, Bendot would have just tortured him.

Majtani

Another prisoner used by Lippo in Trick Tower to test the examinees. Majtani is a strong-looking criminal who tries to intimidate by claiming to be part of the Phantom Troupe, but he is easily defeated by Kurapika. He has a tattoo of a spider on his back, along with hearts on his chest to show the number of victims he has killed. Kurapika proves that it is a fake; Phantom Troupe members will have their member number engraved onto the spider. He also states that they have killed too many people to keep track of the record. Majtani becomes the focus of a subsequent confrontation as both sides wager hours in order to conclude the battle in accordance to the rules. -

Leroute

Another prisoner used by Lippo in Trick Tower to test the examinees. Leroute is a former psychologist who reveled in the misery of her clients. She would often intentionally manipulate her clients into committing suicide. During the Trick Tower portion of the Hunter Exam, she faced Leorio's in a non-combat duel, and easily manipulated him into a series of bets that caused his team to lose fifty hours of time.

Johness the Dissector

Another prisoner used by Lippo in Trick Tower to test the examinees. Johness is allegedly the greatest mass murderer of Zaban City. He killed at least 146 people, all with his bare hands, which are powerful enough to pull flesh from bone, and even crush stones. In Trick Tower, Johness was pitted against Killua in combat, whom he expected would provide the flesh he so loved to tear apart. Instead, Johness has his heart swiftly pulled right out of his chest by Killua, who then crushes it right in front of Johness' eyes. Killua later commented that despite Johness' number of victims, he was still only an amateur killer.

Netero (ネテロ "Netero") is the Chairman of the Selection Committee for the Hunter Exam. Presiding over it, Netero has final authority over every stage of the examination. In his first appearance he makes a 60-foot free-fall jump from the Judging Committee's blimp without a parachute, landing square on his feet without any sign of damage.

He was said to be the strongest Nen user in the world 50 years ago, but he comments that he is already past his prime at his current age and that his subordinates might be stronger than him now (yet his direct subordinates disagree). In his youth, Netero spent four years doing ten-thousand punches and praying every day in order to express gratitude to the martial arts. His time spent doing those punches and prayers led to his enlightenment, giving him the ability to punch faster than the speed of sound. Netero is the Grand Master of the Shingen-Ryu style of Kung fu. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 7|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 060|pages=Pg.123|isbn=978-1-4215-0332-5]

Netero is also revealed to be older than Zeno Zoldyck (Killua's Grandfather), who is said to be 67 years of age. At one point, Zeno says that when he was still a young boy, Netero was not only already old, but he is the only person alive who has fought with Maha (Zeno's) grandfather. Various stated times would put Netero over the three digit mark.

He is able to use attacks faster than the speed of sound. He also uses the "Hyakushiki Kannon" which is also known as the 'Hundred Style of Buddha'. This utilizes nen to make the attacks seem as if they had come from another side and or dimension, simply because they move so fast.

Maamen

Maamen is Netero's secretary and helps to organize a lot of things during Hunter Exam. Highly factual and exacting in his words, he was the one who gave a presentation on the uses of the Hunter license to the successful candidates of the Exam.

Wing is an assistant master of "Shingen Ryu" Kung fu; his main pupil is Zushi. He meets Gon and Killua at the Heavens Arena and eventually teaches them Nen. Although he initially refuses to train the two (even lying to them about the purpose of Nen), he changes his mind when they advance to the 200th floor of Heavens Arena, realizing they could die or be badly injured from the "initiation" rituals of other Nen users. For the next several months he teaches them the basics of Nen, after which he announces they have passed the secret final requirement for being a Hunter. He does however, somewhat fear their immense potential. Wing's teacher was Biscuit Krueger, whom incidentally becomes Gon and Killua's second teacher.

nihongo|Tonpa|トンパ|Tonpa, examinee #16 during the 287th Hunter Exam, is nicknamed the "Rookie Crusher" by other candidates with more experience taking the exam. Tonpa has taken the exam for 35 consecutive terms, but has somehow never managed to pass. He often brags of his experience to those taking the Hunter Exam for the first time and then offers them a helping hand. Of course, this is merely subterfuge as he takes a perverse pleasure in sabotaging their attempts to get the license.

This time around, he trailed Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio while attempting various means to foil their advancement. In order to do this, he used methods like spiking drinks with a strong laxative, feigning fatigue to delay the group's progress, and other nasty tactics. To his chagrin, these had no measurable effect on their progress.

He also attended the following hunter exam (during the Greed Island arc) where he was defeated by Killua; Tonpa was unable to keep hold of his number tag.

Ryu

Examinee #36 during the Hunter Exam. nihongo|Ryu|リュウ|Ryū was a crew-cut examinee who made it to the fourth exam, but failed at that stage.

Pokkle's aim in life is to become a successful wildlife hunter through obtaining the license.

During the discussion that took place after the end of the Exam, Pokkle had lingering doubts over the way Kurapika had passed the last stage. In fact, he was always wary of Kurapika as he excelled on all aspects of character. After the Hunter Exam, Pokkle isn't seen again until the Chimera Ant arc, where he's traveling with several hunters and Ponzu. After being defeated by several Chimera Ants, Pokkle is kidnapped and then brainwashed by Neferpitou into telling the Chimera Ants about nen. After revealing it to them, Pokkle is killed and eaten by the Queen.

Examinee #111 during the Hunter Exam. Anita is a character that appears only in the anime version of Hunter × Hunter, and does not exist in the original manga version. Anita's main goal in entering the Hunter Exam was to attack Killua, as a Zoldyck assassin was responsible for her father's death. Anita failed the second exam, but sneaked onto Chairman Netero's blimp as a stowaway in order to attack Killua. Yet, she ultimately realized her mistake when she discovered that her father was actually a prominent drug-trafficker in the black market, who had made many enemies. The assassins were merely doing their job and should not be held responsible for his death. Having this revelation, Anita parted amicably from the Exam.

Sommy

Examinee #118 during the Hunter Exam. With a trained monkey that follows him wherever he goes, nihongo|Sommy|ソミー|Somii teamed up with Tonpa to steal Leorio's number tag at during the fourth exam. However, the tables were turned on the duo when Kurapika intervened and foiled their plot, resulting in their failure at that stage. Even his monkey did the final act of 'betrayal' by sidling up to Kurapika, revealing the hidden location of Leorio's hidden tag. He also attended the 288th Hunter Exam (During the Greed Island arc) where he was defeated by Killua.

Nicholas

Examinee #156 during the Hunter Exam. nihongo|Nicholas|ニコル|Nikoru is a pudgy yet athletic overachiever with a laptop full of information about the Hunter Exam and his fellow examinees. During the first stage, he runs out of stamina during the run and is the first examinee to be eliminated, at the 80 km mark. Contributing to his failure was his own realization that for once in his life he was not the best, and the Amori Brothers (paid by Tonpa) taunting that weakness.

Bodoro

nihongo|Bodoro|ボドロ|Bodoro is a martial artist with an unspoken rivalry with another martial artist participating in the Hunter Exam. However, this rivalry is tossed aside in the dire circumstances of Lippo's "bonus stage" after the Trick Tower.

His personal code of honor prevents him from fighting children, no matter what their combat ability is. His first battle in the fifth stage of the test is against Hisoka, who he is unable to injure despite previously having a lifetime record of no man being able to withstand one hit by him. After a whisper in his ear by Hisoka, he admits defeat, and his next fight is against Leorio. However, as the fight begins, Killua interferes and suddenly pierces through Bodoro's chest from behind, killing him. Bodoro was examinee #191 during the Hunter exam.

Amori Brothers

nihongo|Amori|アモリ|Amori (#197), nihongo|Imori|イモリ|Imori (#198), and nihongo|Umori|ウモリ|Umori (#199) are three brothers that have repeatedly taken and failed the Hunter Exam. Much of their success in the Hunter Exam is due to their close-knit cooperation. During the fourth stage of the examination, Killua managed to get hold of the youngest brother, who was stalking him at that time. To save his life, the two older brothers willingly gave up their number tags, failing the exam.

They encounter Gon and Killua again in the Heavens Arena and also attended the 288th Hunter Exam where they were easily defeated again by Killua. After they see the huge gap between Killua and themselves, the Amori Brothers decide they will never retake the Hunter Exam again.

Ponzu

nihongo|Ponzu|ポンズ|Ponzu was one of the 24 that managed to enter the fourth stage of the Hunter Exam. Ponzu's secret weapon lies within her round cap, carrying neurotoxic bees under the surface that emerge and attack her enemies when threatened. During the fourth stage, her bees accidentally end up killing Bourbon after falling into his trap. In the second test, featuring cooking, he is the only one to know what 'sushi' is. He is the third candidate to clear the deadly traps and puzzles of the Trick Tower. When several people are stranded in Lippo's 'bonus stage', Hanzo takes the lead in getting them out.

However, the only way to pass the final test to is force your opponent to admit defeat--Gon refuses to do so even after being severely beaten. Hanzo breaks Gon's arm to force him to admit defeat, but Gon still refuses. Noting the lack of hate in Gon's eyes after this act, Hanzo realizes he actually has come to like Gon. He willingly bows out of the battle, giving Gon the victory needed for him to pass the final test. Hanzo was examinee #294 during the 287th Hunter Exam.

nihongo|Knov|ノヴ|Novu is a smartly attired hunter dressed in glasses and a suit. He is Palm's master and the target of her affections. Knov can create warp gates to a "safe house" dimension, which he creates doors in. It is similar to teleportation, but instead of instantly arriving at the destination he goes to his "safe house." His safe house is basically a windowless room, with multiple doors around the room. Within the safe house, he can store items and/or people. When infiltrating the Chimera Ant King's palace in order to place a portal, he came into contact with Shaiapouf's En. It frightened him so much he suffered a nervous breakdown and retreated from the battle.

*Nen Ability: Hide and Seek (ハイドアンドシーク 「4次元マンション」), "lit." By touching a flat surface, like a wall or the ground, Knov can set and open a portal leading to an artificial nen space--a four level "apartment" containing twenty-one rooms of various sizes. Each portal is linked to a specific room, with the maximum number of entrances being dependent on the size of the room, with each room being completely separate from the other rooms. Normally each entrance can only lead back to the portal Knov created for it, however, Knov can use a master key to connect any room exit to any previously set portal. When not in active use by Knov, the portals are closed and impossible to detect. Knuckle also gets along well with animals, having the habit of taking care of abandoned pets.

* Nen Ability: Hakoware (ハコワレ 「天上不知唯我独損」), "lit." "Breaking the bank"Knuckle's ability is "Hakoware: Bankruptcy, Chapter Seven." It involves conjuring an indestructible mascot called the "Amortizing Power Redirector (A.P.R.)" ("Potclean" in the Japanese manga) onto the opponent after being dealt a blow from Knuckle. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink = Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 20|year=2008|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 211|pages=Pg.183|isbn=978-1-4215-1787-2] A.P.R. constantly lends Knuckle's aura to whomever its attached to, displayed by a rising counter on its forehead. As long as the A.P.R. is attached, any attacks done to Knuckle by his opponent return aura to him, lowering the counter. Until all of the aura lent by Knuckle is returned to him, Knuckle cannot be physically damaged by his opponent. The reverse is also true--each of Knuckle's blows only lends aura to his opponent, causing no damage (though in both cases the one receiving the blow may be knocked back by it). The interest rate on A.P.R. is 10% of one's remaining aura, accrued every ten seconds. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink = Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 20|year=2008|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 210|pages=Pg.181|isbn=978-1-4215-1787-2] As the amount of interest accumulates, A.P.R. also grows in size. If the aura borrowed from Knuckle exceeds his opponent's total aura, the opponent goes bankrupt. Bankruptcy causes the conjured A.P.R. to transform into the "Individual Ren Suppressor (I.R.S.)" ("Toritaten" in the Japanese manga), a demon-like mascot that follows the debtor for 30 days and forces them into Zetsu. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink = Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 20|year=2008|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 211|pages=Pg.190-191|isbn=978-1-4215-1787-2] The victim only accumulates interest when within 100 meters of Knuckle, but Knuckle can track the general location of the victim at all times, no matter how far away they are.
