"The Executioner" is a paperback series of books (358 as of September 2008) created and initially written by American author Don Pendleton in 1969 who would go on to write 36 more Bolan novels before he licensed the rights to Gold Eagle. The series details the ongoing adventures of twelve-year career Army sniper Master Sergeant Mack Bolan, introduced in "The Executioner" #1 ("War Against the Mafia").

Several announcements have been made of an "Executioner" film at first produced by Joseph E. Levine who contracted Richard Maibaum to write a screenplay. He based it on the fifth and sixth volumes, "Continental Contract" and "Assault on Soho". [Kraft, David Anthony, "The Executioner Speaks Out!" (interview with Don Pendleton), "Marvel Preview", #2, 1975, Marvel Comics.] Later announcements were made of "Executioner" projects variously starring Burt Reynolds or Sylvester Stallone (with Cynthia Rothrock appearing opposite him [ [http://www.hkmania.com/from.php?fromurl=http://www.hkmania.com/Dossiers/cynthiarothrockeng.html Hk Mania - Le site des fans de cinéma asiatique ] ] ) but the ideas never left development hell. [ [http://www.speakeasy.org/~swmpthng/StonyMan.html The Stony Man Farm ] ]

The Executioner is often cited as the inspiration for the Marvel Comics character The Punisher, who also fights the Mafia as well as James Glickenhaus's "The Exterminator" and Exterminator 2".

Mafia Wars

Bolan is a weapons specialist and skilled armorer who was serving his second tour of duty in Vietnam when he returned home on leave to the United States following news of the death of his parents and sister, and the critical wounding of his younger brother. Bolan discovered that a local "Mafia" "family" had been intimidating and harassing his family, as well as luring his seventeen year old sister into a life of prostitution. When their father learned of this, he committed a triple-murder/suicide, which only the fourteen year old son, Johnny, survived, telling big brother Mack the truth. Bolan decided his war with the "real" enemy was right here at home and not on the battlegrounds of Vietnam.cite book |last= Pendelton|first= Don|authorlink= Don Pendelton |title= "Executioner #1: War Against The Mafia)" |publisher= Pinnacle Publishers |location=New York |date= 1968|pages=P. 200 |isbn= 978-1558170247]

In books 1 through 38 Bolan fights a one man battle against different "Mafia" and "Mafia"-controlled organizations throughout the country. His successes in breaking up various "Mafia" operations (mainly by killing the leadership and most of the local muscle) were attributable to his use of a mix of stealth & infiltration and military-style attacks, including heavy weapons (grenades, mortars, automatic weapons, missiles, sniper rifles) plus his excellent marksmanship with rifles and handguns. His calling card during the early books was to leave a marksman's medal on or near his victims, an idea borrowed from earlier characters in pulp fiction.

During his campaigns against the mafia, which he refers to as his "Mafia Wars," Mack vows to "Shake their house down." He uses such aliases as LaMancha and Omega in conjunction with a laminated playing card of an [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
] . This card was used by the mafia to identify a mafia enforcer called a "Black Ace" who had almost unlimited power among "Mafiosi" to even unseat the head of a "Mafia" family on his own authority. A Black Ace was greatly feared by "Mafia" families.

The New War

Beginning in #39, "A New War", Mack Bolan gets a new identity. Now known as Col. John Phoenix (Retired) he is given a command center in Virginia dubbed "Stony Man Farm". From there he wages war against terrorist organizations throughout the world. Phoenix was chosen to be Bolan's new alias in reference to the mythological bird that would resurrect itself from the ashes of a former life, just as Bolan had done after the events of "Executioner" #38, "Satan's Sabbath".

Characters

*Mack Samuel Bolan - Alias John Macklin Phoenix, retired Colonel, USA; A.K.A. Striker, Stony Man One, Kicker, Executioner, Sarge, and Sergeant Mercy. First was an Army sergeant stationed in Vietnam. Later single handedly declared war on the Mafia for 39 consecutive attacks. Later given command of the Government Covert Operation PROJECT PHOENIX (which consists of anti-terrorism and dealing with missions which are sometimes too difficult or too sensitive for the military or government [CIA, FBI, INTERPOL, OR OSI] to handle). The Phoenix Program is a covert operation unrecorded makes the 160-acre Stony Man estate in the Shenandoah Mountains the command center of the most formidable national security force ever assembled.

*April Rose - Primary mission controller and overseer of Stony Man's Virginia "farm" HQ. Provides logistics, back-up support, loving care for the Phoenix people. (now deceased)

*Hal Brognola - Director of the Sensitive Operations Group, Stony Man liaison with the Oval Office. In his three-piece suit this ex-FBI agent looks like a vice president of IBM. In fact he is a streetwise, third-generation American who worked his own way into the stratosphere of the Justice Department's covert operations section. In that capacity he first met Mack Bolan.

*Aaron Kurtzman - Known as "The Bear" Big, rumpled librarian of Stony Man's extensive electronic data bank, from which he interfaces with those of the National Security Council, the Justice Department, the CIA, DIA and the intelligence agencies of every allied nation. Brilliant, a living extension of his computer. His tobacco stained fingers dance over the console to call up mug shots, maps, raw data of all kinds.

*Leo Turrin - Mob elder statesman (Leo "The Pussy" Turrin), undercover agent for Justice's Orgcrime Division, Washington lobbyist with connections, now officer of the Phoenix operation. From a capo on La Commissione to special friend and advisor to Bolan the blitz artist, this lieutenant of both the international underworld and sensitive operations walks a perilous path through the savage pastures.

*Jack Grimaldi - Combat pilot in Nam (137 missions, 2 purple hearts), later a flyboy for the mob, now head of his SOG cadre: G-Force. Can fly anything from a single engine scout to a Boeing 767, has proven himself to be Bolan's ace card on many missions. Of Italian parentage, is flamboyant, reckless, yet ruthlessly efficient. King of the sky.

*Andrzej Konzaki - Officially with special weapons development, CIA, is unofficially attached to the Phoenix Program. One of the most innovative armorers in the world. Master weaponsmith, expert on small arms, handguns to machine guns; knives, small explosives, other devices, and assigns them accordingly to circumstances, locales. Legless since Vietnam. His CIA profile says: "trust him". Killed in Executioner #62, "Day Of Mourning."

*Tommy Anders*

*Toby Ranger*

*Smiley Dublin** - Not regulars with the Phoenix Operation.

pinoff series

Aside from the Stony Man Farm Operation (Phoenix Program) there are two covert tactical neutralization teams assigned to Stony Man but work separate from it, called Phoenix Force and Able Team. Each had their own series of books. There are many crossovers between series adding to overall continuity among the characters and story lines.

There was also the "SuperBolan" series consisting of larger and thicker paperback books (109 issues published). These story arcs sometimes overlapped with "The Executioner", "Phoenix Force" and "Able Team" stories. The series started with "Stony Man Doctrine" where Bolan and his two tactical neutralization teams save 20 million hostages from international terror.

Phoenix Force

:"Main article: Phoenix Force."Phoenix Force is one of the two tactical neutralization teams based out of Stony Man Farm. The Force's specialty is combating international terrorism. Each member was handpicked by Mack Bolan. They can be compared to the French Foreign Legion, specializing in hostage rescue missions.

Its role and composition has since evolved to a broader scope, which means they generally operate outside the U.S. borders.

Original Members

*Yakov Katzenelenbogen - A French-Israeli, known as "Katz". Former intelligence chief, underground guerilla veteran. Right arm missing below elbow, casualty of Mid-East Wars. (Deceased)
*Gary Manning - Canadian, ballistic and explosives and security engineer. Counter-terrorism investigator, special forces instructor, rugged, strong, fast.
*Keio Ohara - Japanese, martial Arts and electronics expert, para-commando training. Tall for an oriental, has complete knockout potential in one-on-one combat. He died in an assault on the Black Alchemists (Phoenix Force #12), but not without taking his killers with him.
*David McCarter - British, Anti-terror, riot control and commando expert. Former SAS officer. Rude, rugged, ruthless, and cynical. Sharp sense of humor.
*Rafael Encizo - Cuban-American, survivor of Bay of Pigs and Castro's prisons. Expert in naval and underwater warfare, strong on leadership qualities.

New Members

*Calvin James - Ex-SEAL, ex-SWAT, James was recruited during a San Francisco SWAT team mission that went to hell in a handbasket, then kidnapped by McCarter and Manning (PF #12: The Black Alchemists), arriving blindfolded at the Farm still dressed in his SWAT uniform. In his late twenties or early thirties and is described as a "nice-looking guy" with a dangerous, mysterious quality to him. He was the first natural-born American and the only African-American to join Phoenix Force, initially to supplement the team with his knowledge of biochemistry and medicine. He serves as the unit's medic, and has a natural talent for con artistry. He is a skilled martial artist and knife fighter, originally from Chicago's South Side. Along with Encizo, he is considered to be Stony Man's resident edged weapons expert. He was the first member of Phoenix Force to not be recruited or screened in any way by Mack. He is missing the tip of his little pinky on his left hand, thanks to a torturer during a mission at the Vatican.

*T.J. Hawkins - Ex-Ranger, ex-Delta Force, Hawkins was recruited by Katz and Bolan shortly after Katz retired from field work and David McCarter became the new commander of Phoenix Force. Named after Confederate general Stonewall Jackson, Hawkins followed in his father's footsteps and joined the U.S. Army. His career was cut short when he resigned after nearly getting wrongfully brought up on murder charges for shooting a Somali warlord that was endangering a small Somali village.

Able Team

:"Main article: Able Team."
Able Team consists of three friends of Mack Bolan from his life before Stony Man Farm: Rosario "Fhe Politician" Blancanales, Hermann "Gadgets" Schwarz, and Carl "Ironman" Lyons (Team Lead). Pol & Gadgets first appeared in "Death Squad" (book two of the original series).

Able Team's primary missions are to fight domestic terrorism throughout North, Central, and South America. However, they have seen action outside the Americas.

*Carl Lyons - Blond, blue-eyed ex-LAPD sergeant, this recent veteran of the Justice Department's war against organized crime has seen enough blow-torched, pliers-mangled corpses to know what to do about today's psycho punks--shoot first. A fear-inspiring berserker, full of smooth motion and sudden explosions of energy. A pack horse too, because of his insistence on taking along the right equipment. Lyons, to quote Mack and Gadgets, is "Five different kinds of scary, scary dude". Carl is ex-LAPD, ex-Special Operations Group (SOG) and currently leads Able Team. "Ironman" to those who know him.
*Rosario Blancanales - From a Chicano background, he's know as "Pol". Moves like a native, no matter where he is. Understands the enemy, then either changes him or neutralizes him. Able Team's broad-shouldered senior member now fights the war against international terrorism with a special kind of sophistication and fury.
*Hermann Schwarz - Code named "Gadgets" for his wizardry with electronics devices, this Vietnam vet with metaphysical leanings has a genius level IQ and a penchant for the unusual and unexpected in strategy and action. Expert in explosives, quiet kills, guerrilla tactics, he is a technological Apache.

ample Story Description

Tragedy strikes Operation Phoenix. It seems a KGB mole was planted somewhere within the government. Because of the clever plot conceived by Maj. Gen. Greb Strakhov, enemy agents attack Stony Man Farm. April Rose and Andrzej Konzaki are dead, Aaron Kurtzman is paralyzed from the waist down, and Stony Man security guards are all dead.

Shortly thereafter, Mack Bolan is framed for the assassination of an anti-communist dissident and is coincidentally put on top of all agencies' "EXTERMINATE WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE" lists. Bolan finds the KGB mole, Lee Farnsworth of the CFB, and executes him in front of the President right in the Oval Office. Bolan is now on the run from all American and European countries' Intelligence Agencies. Once again on his own with no government support like in the old days, Bolan fights a self-declared war on the scum of the earth.

While on assignment in Moscow, Bolan manages to obtain a master list of all major KGB agents operating throughout the would. These are Bolan's targets. Bolan manages to execute the master mind of the destruction of Stony Man Farm. Hal Brognola has been secretly aiding Bolan in his one man war. Bolan has also received further assistance from what is left of Stony Man along with Phoenix Force and Able Team.

The Executioner Mystery Magazine

In 1975, Leonard J. Ackerman Productions produced "Don Pendleton's The Executioner Mystery Magazine", a digest-sized, pulp magazine anthology series along the same lines as the "Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine". The magazine had little connection to the Mack Bolan books save for the occasional story related to the Mafia. The magazine ran for only four issues, ending in August 1975, with the final issue titled simply "The Executioner Mystery Magazine".
