Ákos Vereckei

Ákos Vereckei

Ákos Vereckei (born August 26, 1977 in Budapest) is a Hungarian kayaker, who has won two Olympic gold medals in the team kayak events. One of the sport's top stars, he has also had outstanding success at the kayaking World and European Championships.

His favourite event is the K1 500m. He won three consecutive world titles (1998-2001). In 2005 he won his fifth straight European title over this distance. His reign came to an abrupt end in 2006 when he was beaten by Zoltán Benkő in the Hungarian trial and was therefore unable to defend his title.

For the 2006 Flatwater Racing World Championships in Szeged he was however again selected for the Hungary K4 1000m boat which won the gold medal by a margin of over a second ahead of Poland and Belarus.

Vereckei is a member of the Budapest Honvéd FC club. He is 186 cm (6'1") tall and weighs 78 kg (194 lbs).
