The Uhlerstown-Frenchtown Bridge is a free bridge over the Delaware River, owned and operated by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. The bridge carries Bridge Street, connecting New Jersey Route 12 in Frenchtown, Hunterdon County, New Jersey with Pennsylvania Route 32 in Uhlerstown, located in Tinicum Township, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
The existing bridge has a roadway width of 16 feet 6 inches. A sidewalk is supported on steel cantilever brackets. The bridge maintains a fifteen-mile per hour speed limit.
History
A wooden span bridge built in 1841 was the original bridge on the site. Though two spans on the New Jersey side were lost on the flood of October 10, 1903, several of the supports from the original structure remain and support today's structure.
The bridge went through a major rehabiltation project in 1931, with the installation of a six-span steel truss design. A steel open-grate deck was added in 1949.
The weight limit for vehicles travelling across the bridge was reduced from 15 tons down to 5 in May 2000.
A 2001 rehab project included repainting the bridge, replacing the floor and sidewalk, and installation of new lighting and guard rails.
