Capsule in
microbiology refers to a layer that lies outside thecell wall of bacteria. This layer is well organized and not easily washed off. It is usually composed ofpolysaccharides . Capsules help protect bacteria againstphagocytosis . Capsules also contain water which protects bacteria againstdesiccation . They also exclude bacterial viruses and mosthydrophobic toxic materials such asdetergents .ee also
