Banatski Brestovac

Banatski Brestovac (Банатски Брестовац) is a village located in the Pančevo municipality, in the South Banat District of Serbia. It is situated in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The village has a Serb ethnic majority and its population numbering 3,517 people (2002 census).

Name

Village name refers to the stands of elm trees that surrounded the village. The name of the village is of Serbian origin, and the legend about origin of the name claim that the village was first settled by the Serb settlers from village Brestovik located on the southern bank of the Danube.

In Serbian, the village is known as "Banatski Brestovac" or Банатски Брестовац, in Hungarian as "Beresztóc" ("until 1898 Bresztóvácz") or "Temes-Aga", and in German as "Banat Brestowatz" or "Rustendorf".

Geography

The closest bigger places are Pančevo (21km), and Belgrade (38km). The Latitude of the village is: N 44° 43' 44.3", and the Longitude is: E 20° 48' 49.52".

History

In the year of 1717 Banatski Brestovac is mentioned for first time in an Latin document under name Praestowatz. In that time, the population of the village numbered 12 families. In the year 1763, 130 German families are settled and also 104 Serb families existed in village in that time. The Serbs had their Orthodox Church and mill. In 1766 Catholic Church is erected (in 1945 it was demolished by communists).
