Loughguile's hurling team is the only team in Ulster to have won the All Ireland club championship, doing so in 1983. However since then the team has struggled at senior level and have yet to recapture the glory days.As they have reach the Antrim Senior Hurling Final every year in the past six years. However, the Loughiel Shamrocks have great success at under age level and have many great young hurlers on the county panel.

There were no major incidents or fatalites as a result of the troubles in Loughguile though there was always strong support for Irish republicanism in the area.
