Pacific League

Pacific League

The Nihongo|Pacific League|パシフィック・リーグ|Pashifikku Rīgu or Nihongo|Pa League|パリーグ|Pa Rīgu is one of Japan's two major professional baseball leagues, the other being the Central League. It was founded as the "Taiheiyo Baseball Union" in 1949 with seven teams, the name changing to its current form in 1980. Designated hitters are used when one team in the Pacific League hosts a game.

Current teams

*Chiba Lotte Marines (Chiba)
*Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks (Fukuoka)
*Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters (Sapporo)
*Orix Buffaloes (Osaka and Kobe)
*Saitama Seibu Lions (Tokorozawa)
*Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles (Sendai)

After the 2004 season, the Orix BlueWave and the Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes merged to form the Orix Buffaloes. A franchise was granted to the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles to fill the void caused by the merger.

Also since 2004, an Playoff system was introduced in the Pacific League (Pacific League Championship Series). The top three teams plays in a 3-games(first stage) 5-games(final) format knockout. While the winner or Pacific League will be automatically advanced to the finals, the second and the third place are played to get another place of finals. Winner will be the representative of Pacific League to the Japan Series. Since Pacific League won all the Japan Series after introducing such system, such system was introduced to Central League in 2007, and the post-season intra-league games were renamed "Climax Series" in both Leagues, which Winners of their league's Climax Series will be playing in the Japan Series. However, regular league's position which affact the order of drafts, and player records are not affacted in such games.
