- Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota
-
The Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota is a political office in North Dakota. The Lieutenant Governor's duty is to preside as President of the Senate, and is responsible for legislative relations, the state budget and agri-business development. Should the Governor's office become vacant, the Lieutenant Governor assumes that office.
The current Lieutenant Governor is Drew Wrigley. With the election of Governor John Hoeven to one of North Dakota's Senate seats in November 2010, then Lieutenant Governor Dalrymple automatically assumed the governorship upon Hoeven's resignation. Dalrymple appointed Wrigley to be Lieutenant Governor shortly after.
Under North Dakota state law, upon a vacancy in the Lieutenant Governor's office, the Governor is allowed to appoint the position. On November 4, 2010, Lt. Governor Dalrymple announced that upon his succession to the Governor's office, he would appoint former North Dakota U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley as the new Lieutenant Governor. Dalrymple and Wrigley were officially sworn in to their new positions during a joint session of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly on December 7, 2010.
Originally, the Lieutenant Governor was elected separately from the Governor of North Dakota. This, however, allowed the Lieutenant Governor and the Governor to be from different parties, which sometimes created hostile situations between the two officers. This was changed in 1974, and since then, the Governor and Lieutenant are elected together on a joint ballot and are of the same party.
