Jeremy Barnes

Jeremy Barnes is best known as the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel. He has also worked and recorded with Bright Eyes, Bablicon, Beirut, The Gerbils, Broadcast and Alan Jenkins and The Thurston Lava Tube. He has toured as a one-man solo act. Jeremy Barnes dropped out of DePaul University to play drums in Neutral Milk Hotel when asked by Jeff Mangum and Julian Koster after a brief audition in Chicago.

A Hawk and a Hacksaw

Barnes has recorded somewhat experimental projects under the A Hawk and a Hacksaw name. His first album, a self-titled affair, kept a folksy tone to it, having been recorded in France with a group of Elephant Six bandmates including members of Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control and Of Montreal, real name Kevin Barnes, a second cousin of Jeremy. His second album, "Darkness at Noon", is less experimental in tone, relying on accordion, violin, oud, trumpet, tuba, piano. The album ends with the song "Portlandtown," by Derroll Adams, folk troubadour of the 50's.
