Alma, New Brunswick

Alma, New Brunswick

Alma (2006 Population 301) is a village in Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada. The village is at the mouth of the Upper Salmon River, where it empties into the Bay of Fundy.

Alma is the site of the headquarters of Fundy National Park, making tourism a major part of the local economy. Because of its close proximity to the Bay of Fundy, it is considered by locals to be the "Home of the Highest Tides in the World." Fishing, of lobster and scallops, is the other source of income.

The village was established in 1856, and named for the then-recent Battle of Alma. [cite book | last = Hamilton | first = William Baillie | title = Place Names of Atlantic Canada | publisher = University of Toronto Press | id = ISBN 0802075703 | year = 1996 | pages = p. 43]
