Clip strip

Invented by Edward Spitaletta in 1979, a clip strip® is a retail product display, so named because it is a length of material (either plastic or metal) with clips and/or hooks at regular intervals, upon which merchandise is displayed. The clip strip® is then hung off a shelf, pole, wall, power panel, gondola, freezer case or end-cap, which are the more popular locations, while serving as a display merchandising vehicle prompting the propensity to induce impulse purchases by customers wandering the aisles of a retail store. Although the intentions originally were to prompt impulse sales, the Clip Strip® has evolved into a primary product display tool, where product programs are presented as the primary display vehicle, totally dependent on its functionality in the long term success of a product's lifespan. Though the term "clip strip®" is a registered trademark of Clip Strip Corporation, Hackensack, NJ (the company that invented and produced the first "clip strip®"), many display and POP professionals as well as buyers, category managers, brand & marketing managers and other industry professionals errantly use the term synonymously with "merchandising strips" - the generic term for these clever display products. The invention known as the Clip Strip® created an entirely new industry now known as the P.O.P. industry. Clip Strip Corporation has defended its trademark in several landmark cases and has prevailed in protecting its trademark.

The Clip Strip® was invented in 1979 by Edward Spitaletta. At that time, Mr. Spitaletta applied and was successfully issued US Patent on his invention. That patent lasted 20 years and eventually expired, as patents do. Complete with the trademark Clip Strip®, the company started by Ed Spitaletta, the CLIP STRIP CORPORATION still owns the CLIP STRIP trademark to this day. Many competitors have entered the merchandising strip arena founded by Mr. Spitaletta, but only one company, his CLIP STRIP CORP., can boast the ability to manufacture and distribute the original CLIP STRIP®. Companies such as ATA Retail Services (http://www.ataretail.com) and LaMi Retail (http://www.lamiretail.com), impulse merchandising providers, use merchandising strips to display their many products in national and regional grocery retailers. They specialize in "back-to-back" fixtures which allows for high visibility of the products as well as more item selection for the consumer. ATA and LaMi have taken advantage of the benefits of using merchandising strips to promote impulse merchandise. To learn more about ATA Retail Services you can go to www.ataretail.com and more info on LaMi, go to http://www.lamiretail.com.

The merchandise on a merchandising strip is usually the same type of item as the regular merchandise found on the store's shelves with perhaps some variation in UPC, item color, shape, design or weights and measures between units.

A merchandising strip is a versatile and effective retail device because it increases a customer's exposure to immediately identify the item displayed thereby creating an impulse buy. Merchandising strips at the checkout register maximize product exposure and create impulse sales at high profit margins. The most common places for clip strips® and other merchandising strips are in high-traffic areas or near accessory merchandise. Merchandising strips are also a good tool to implement a cross-marketing/merchandising program. (i.e. selling batteries in the toy aisle or displaying a soup ladle in the canned soup section).
