Colony of Fiji

Colony of Fiji

The Colony of Fiji was established on the 10 October, 1874, when Seru Epenisa Cakobau, the self-declared "Tui Viti" (King of Fiji) ceded Fiji to the British Crown. The 10th of October is celebrated not only as Fijian Independence Day, but also as Fijian Cession Day. After the cession of Fiji to Great Britain, Fiji was placed under the administration of the Governor of Fiji. The Colony of Fiji ended in 1970, when it was declared independent as the Dominion of Fiji.
